question on formations
Ammianus_marcellinus
I am a fan of using formations during battles, even though there are only three choices. the direction these formations are facing are important, but i have found it difficult to control. if, for example, i want a formation of cruisers to face the enemy, but i want the whole formation to move over and i click to the left of the formation, the formation will reform perpendicular to their previous position. i then have to keep telling the formation to move around until they are once again facing the enemy. this can become dangerous when an enemy task force is heading my way. my question is this; is there any way to set up a formation so that you can move it but it faces a certain way when movement is complete?

a quick sidenote, please let me know if this is coherent and my point is clear, im all drugged up courtesy of the dentist who just removed my wisdom teeth.

Well I think that you might be able to get what you are after with the "Waypoint" function. Not sure though as I am far more likely to maneuver groups than full formations so I have not tried it.

Good luck with the medicines. I had the same *fun* a few years back.

The issue with formations is that they tend to fall apart and stay apart in the highly decentralised battlespace of PDS. I only use strikegroups as a way of keeping forces together while manuvering them outside of combat. Once the lead start's flyin' however, ships with vastly diffrent flight models and acceleration/manuvering are going to break away from one another.

For slow heavy gun ships like Prince of Hiigara or Maijirian or Arbiter derivatives, formations may keep these ships together in a 'battle sphere' where these immobile gunboats can tear apart the lighter armor on fast attack craft. Imagine a herd of Elephants gathering in a tight circle to defend their young against a pride of Lions, the same applies to heavy gun ships guarding carriers against Frigates and Fast attack ships.

But when deploying fast attack boats, formations are only useful for holding indavidual squadrons together during transit between two areas of operation, and should be forsaken in high intensity operations.
