BEAMS!
Viper114
I don't know about any of you, but I find the whole thing in regards to Ion beams for almost every ship seems to be...kinda silly. Frigates and Capital Ships, I understand, but giving Interceptor, Bombers and Corvettes beam weapons doesn't seem to fit right. Maybe I'm too used to the way the weapons were handled in vanilla HW, but I prefer the Interceptors to have Mass Driver weapons and Bombers to have their Plasma Bombs. Is there any chance in a future version that the weapon effects of the smaller ships to be changed back into their original versions from their beams they have now?

Trust me, the beams grow on you. It's kind like if Disco Stu was a laser.

The beams on the small ships are the new genoration of small scale Assault Ion Cannons, the next step in development of Pulse Ion cannon technology adapted from the Bentusi Super Acolyte designs obtained at the close of the Beast War. In fact, the Hiigaran ICAs function almost exactly like their Bentusi counterparts, with the exeption of the Bentusi ICAs use Helium ions as a basis for the beam itself wheras almost all Hiigraran ion weapons use Hydrogen.

Their advantages to traditional ballistics should be obvious. They travel at nearly the speed of light, much faster then bullets or missiles.

They have much greater armor penatration capability then massdrivers, though not as much as Pulse Ion Cannons or the large helical accellerators on Hiigaran ships like the Lothringen or Prince of Hiigara.

They consume fairly low amounts of energy by using an array of artifical crystal tubes, as opposed to an accelleration ladder, so they can be mounted on smaller ships like Blade fighters or Thunderbolt attack bombers.

The biggest drawback is that they only effect a target area the size of the diameter of the barrel, wheras amall caliber ballistics and weapons like PC40s create a cone of fire and can be fired rapidly, when the two are used in unison, they create an effective platform suitable for many types of targets.

Why ships like the Avenger IV lack secondary PC40s for close in work is anyone's guess.

If you want old style ballistic-based combat then get V11. V732 is too technologically advanced for its game system to follow. Hence, beam spam.

V11 beams are -much- more powerful though - the single reactor fed plasma lance of the Vaygr Achaemenes allows it to outclass the older generation HGN Arbiters with ease. Likewise general purpose 1-2GW units on frigates and capital secondary batteries are rated for 4000-12000 damage units per 5 second discharge. Not big compared to V11 ballistic weapons but have a very high hit rate (80%).

That's why all V11 beta 3 Vaygr ships have anti-beam armour and that's why Hiigaran ships still have heavy massdriver armament. Those AC100 arrays are decisive... if you get in AC range and don't get destroyed first.

And yes, that means I got the new, sim-based armour type modelling successfully deployed.

Boy, sounds like Vaygr are going to be near impossible to beat with that kind of weaponry in V11...

I don't know, I just find the whole criss-crossing of beams from every single ship to get kinda silly at times. It's not that they're bad, but too many of them do also bog down even my monstrous PC.

Amen to that Viper, that's why I'm putting beams on the upper end of the firepower scale, at a very high cost in power requirements. So beam armed ships should be respected.

The exception is anti missile lasers, which are invisible on screen anyway. These don't need to be as powerful as anti ship DEWs so even fighters and corvettes may have them.

I do not mind the beams on every ship, just make their duration last for only a moment.
