Ship Concepts
TelQuessir
As you may know, several of our custom modelled vessels are based loosely on Relic concepts, so I want you folks to take a look at Homy's gallery for HW2 concepts here http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/v/Hom...ncept+Art/

And suggest some worthwhile projects for the 5G modelling team we have right now.

Btw, you may consider the QJE/Al-Mou'akar class a 5G vessel.

This idea while not new to sci fi in general has never been seen in the hw universe, that I know of. Now I have no idea if its possible within the code but having a ship that can break itself into smaller self sufficient pieces could be an advantage in some situations, swarms of fighter craft for instance, im sure there are others as well. A command can be given and the larger ship( perhaps battleship sized) could then split into in several smaller (destroyer/cruiser) ships that would then go out and attack multiple targets, or work as part of a unit performing manuvers together.

just an idea, like I said i dont know if it would have real opperational advantage or not but thats up to tel and others to hash out.

"Lord Admiral, Having delivered my report. I need to update you on some issues we've been having with our recent deep space engagements---" The admiral turned back to the desk and deactivated the screen which had been displaying the image of a battle torn control room on the carrier assigned to the Seventh Fleet.

"As I'm sure you've gathered from this and other messages in recent months The Seventh has finally decided to forward a request for an updated SWACS cruiser.
Given the increasing range of typical combat theaters and the greater capability of ships to maneuver in those theaters our commanders have often found need for improved levels of intelligence upon enemy movements than may be currently provided by use of carriers skipping through hyperspace or extensive probe deployment.
This is especially apparent when an enemy flees out of the main plane of resource gathering operations and seeks the safety of open space while on conventional drives.
In light of the increasing obsolescence of AMCs they were especially interested if you could forward them designs to refit these as SWACS craft to stand in while a dedicated ship was developed for this task."

(SWACS = Spaceborne Warning and Control System. Basically this is a suggestion for a nice big ship bristling with long range sensors and the like.)

This thing could be an Imperator V:

I remember Tel saying on the relic boards once that the split hull heavy battleship concept had too unbalanced a weapon loadout (entirely kinetic and missile) too be a viable PDS ship. I suppose it could be fitted with some DEW weapons though.

Rather like the concept of integrating a firecontrol tower into a ship to get a flotilla leader, that is, putting the function of a hyperspace module into something that isn't quite so easy to blow up and that can accompany strike forces to give them more freedome without tying up a capship.

Updated version of the Vag missile platform with 5G missiles and a salvo launch ability.

Edited URL's that was not working /Homy

Vagyr fire support Battleship. Something with built in fire control enhancement to act as a center-piece for heavy fire-support flotillas. and equipped with some god-awful big gun that barely fits in a spinal mount like a giant sized version of the Khalid's main guns or a Vagyr SHARG equivalent.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/v/Hom...y.JPG.html

And since we're on the subject of big fire-support weapons why not another MC variant. The chassis's obviously got lots of open room inside to house a launch facility, and it's very horizontally oriented. How about a variant with a large, internal weapon mounted there.

If the fireball can't be seen from orbit you obviously aren't trying hard enough.

Let's brainstorm:

1. Mr Who -

Imperator V concept looks like our deep space escort carrier.

The DM Flag cruiser looks great. Like a Hiigaran assault carrier concept built out of the Imperator - A7 is doing one of these

2. CIWS

I like the first one. Looks like a good support ship.

Second one with split hull - look carefully, structural integrity problems in such a design. The largest stress point is the connection between secondary hull and engine section.

Side topic:

Saw the Port of Nalthor, 15 FLT HQ and pilot's suit concepts.

Especially the last item there, excellent concepts.

You mean the third one then right? Second one doesn't even have an engine that I can see. THough I suppose you're right, problem is most of the vaggy cap-ships aren't so well suited for my beloved 'Huge Guns o' Doom'.. though I wonder how big a cannon you could fit with a spinal mount on an Al-khalid chassis... mmmmm boom.

You may note that we are moving far away from spinal mount weaponry, the big bad lady of a QJE is having a field day eating up the spinal mount weapon battleships.

CIWS
For main-line combatants certainly, especially since the helical style ions mean you don't need great big honking turrets to get a nasty ion weapon in. I was referring more to fire-support style vessels like the Merkava or Hydrashark, writ large (so sitting back with them plinking instead of getting in near where the QJE can do nasty things to it).

But that's a personal thing and I'm really not sure if it would be possible to justify a support platform that size.

On another note has a more heavily militarized version of the mothership been considered? I was fiddling around in single player earlier and couldn't help but notice that it seems kinda.. lacking compared to the veritable wall of fire a Shipyard can throw out.

Regarding early warning ship - fleet support vessels and flotilla leaders (and capital command ships) function admirably as both those and in the "space control" role with their extensive on-board armaments and fighter capacity.

The upcoming Vanguard class heavy fleet cruiser will have a large extended sensors array for the SWACS role.

I think this concept is a good idea. While the spinal mounted configuration is being moved away from, the idea of a Long Range 'Formation Breaker' type vessel would be excellent. A vessel that has a long range area effect weapon (kind of like a howitzer, though more accurate). The weapon itself could be similar to the hydrashark but more powerful, not able to fire more than once every couple of minutes. It would be designed to hit enemy formations as they approach. The ship would need to have a minumum range, so that it can't fire up close (can be attributed to the fact that most formations will have broken up at close range and the ship lacks the accuracy to hit single targets). It would also need forward observers to that it's fire can be directed (probes, scouts etc).

A possible design: The ship at the bottom of this page.

Here I thought You all had used them concepts a long time ago...
Jeez...Grin

damn long URL's...

A tip, url is presented slightly shorter if You click the link "Download Photo" below every image in Gallery.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/main....itemId=214
That will become a link to the image itself, outside gallery layout.

@CIWS
I edited 2 non working URL's in Your post, and made them in to new links as the one above.

I dont get it, there is an URL rewrite function for shorter urls.
Must look in to it...

I've always believed that spinal mounts are all but useless on anything bigger than a destroyer, and should only be used if it is absolutely necessary to fit a huge weapon on a ship, which it should never be.

I would love to see the return of square ships again, those turrents look like Battletechs PPCs- large kinetic force with burning after effect would love to see those ingameSmile think keeper cannons cept projectile size increased 300%.

oooh *edit url doesnt work but i ment the flag ship were its compareing the size of it to a frigate/destroyer/fighters*
that would make a wonderful front line base! truly your zone of control would move with that thing!

Spinal mounts are from the ways of old, why force a ship to remain motionless in these days of mobility? large masses of forward weaponry that can attack multiple targets in a 180 degree cone in front of the ship would more then make up for the loss of massive spinal weaponry.

One would think the higgys would enjoy the return of fleet based ships?. Gundam seed has made a very good use of unique ships that are the center of every major force, they dont need to uniform each one is tailored to its commander and is always the command center for the entire battle area. They would be like a modern carrier group.

On this one, I could be mistaken, but the vessel in question is remarkably (too remarkably) similar to that of the Bishop class heavy freighter. Possibly a refit redesign of the Arcadia's launch bay? For some reason, the current launch bay doesn't really seem to fit the aesthetic of the overall design.

And Tel, on the subject of the split hull design motiff for the Vaygr.

Quote

Bare in mind the Vaygr Destroyer. Our perception of physics and stress are redefined in a weightless, gravity-less environment. Besides, using that split hull design would bring a 'canon' design to the mod, yes? True it didn't make the cut, therefore its cannonality is called into question, but it was designed in the universe by the conceptual artists that created the universe.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/295...ship01.jpg

Render this design for a frigate range support vessel for strike craft. Capalbe of keeping pace with fast strike forces, cheaper then an escort carrier, and capable of servicing a few fighters here and there.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/376...gate01.jpg

It's Vaygr counterpart?

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/310...+rough.jpg

On the subject of a refit and upgrade of the Mothership to make her, 'battleworthy.' This looks just.... INSANE!!! Grin It looks, treacherous and breaks the smooth lines that the ship currently has too consistently. Would allow for more weapons modules to be mount both dorsally and ventrally of the those horizontal blisters whatevers. Out of all the ships in HW2, the mothership needs the luving the most, I'm telling you!

She should be far more battleworthy, seriously, if I'm a planetary body and I build a puppy that big, she's going to have atleast twice her current load out ofmerly two heavy weapon modules and assorted point dense emplacements along her hull. And she's going to be extremely survivable.

She should be able to move faster also, by about 50 units. Is there anything anyone can do about unlocking the ship from it's 'verticle' orientation? If it's turning it should pitch abit.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/406...edship.JPG
This one looks 'interesting.' Perhapes a more resilent fast scout corvette category?

Stormhammer
-drooling over the megastation designs in the Development Gallery- It's a shame they took out all the station designs...

Oh, and check these carrier shots?

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/151...ota079.jpg

Battle carrier perhapes? Ofcourse it needs to be spiffed up, the design aesthetic is retro compared to contemporary higarian.

http://www.hwshots.hwaccess.net/d/155...03_001.jpg

Someone was talking about a real 'wolfpack' type vessel, load this one out with some honking warheads, two forward mount Ion Cannons and some minor point defense munitions and give it the ability to hit a serious 'flank' speed for a frigate size vessel? Be purty mean.

Maybe add engine trails to frigates too?
