PDS Version organization

When I first stumbled upon PDS I was overjoyed. Like... the laws of the universe dictate that I kiss each of the developers pinky toes in thanks that you made what could have been a game of actual strategy into a game that well... focused around strategy.

I bee lined straight to the download section to get the latest version... and then I actually read the home page... and then I looked at the different versions and saw that there were larger file sizes for some of the older versions. To say the least it took a while to figure out that different versions culminate at a certain point and start anew.

I am still stumbling around trying to figure out at which point a version ends an era and becomes a new one. I mean, it's listed somewhere in multiple posts, but it's never the clearest thing. I think this puts off the casual mod player because he most likely doesn't want to try to figure that out.

What i'm suggesting is maybe a base information page that is always up to date with information such as...

versions and corresponding eras. You have the first era listed as v 7.0 - 7.2, but the third era as 7.2 w/strategic layer, which translates into 9.0?
What happened to v 8.0 and 4 and 5 and 6. What are they?

As well, version descriptions would be very helpful. What does 7.0 have and do vs 9.0. Normally, at least from what I've seen, newer versions continue to expand on older versions, while retaining those older features. It seems that you erase and restart certain concepts... to an extent.

As well, installation instructions were layed out by homeboy,(much thanks), but if there are any special installation situations... i doubt it, but in case.

The last thing I can think of is overlap of versions. What happens if I mix v 7.2 with v9.0. Would it flat out not work hard code wise, or would it technically work, but not really. (spreadsheet of compatability?)The ships for one era are completely different from the other and operate on a more advanced system, thus beating the s*** out of your, what you thought, amazing fleet.

(spreadsheet of compatability?)

That's all I think, but before I accidentally offend anyone, I have gone looking through the forums and have a vague sense, but it still isn't very clear to me. I apologize for my ineptitude, but regardless, I think that a section like that which is concise, would clear up many problems with repostings of the same issues.

Also, if something I say seems to set you off, let me know so I can clarify what I mean, because I most definitely do not try to make people mad at me.

Sadly, after canoeing to Mars from the Asian mainland, the first Martian aboriginals all died out. Experts suspect the lack of food, air and water to be linked to this.

PDS is like Shahrazad. She may be logical or maybe not. She can tell you the same story but different every night.

More seriously, the following has been said quite a few times on this forum and the news (but I don't blame you for not finding it, this can be hard if you're not familiar with the site):

- PDS7.0 has been evolved to 7.3.0 - download link in the eponym thread
- PDS7.6 is the most innovative redesign, based off the old NGCS model - download from Tel'Quessir's space on filefront linked on this site homepage
- PDS9.0 alpha is a sort of compromise between the classic RTS 7.0 and the 7.6 experiment - download directly from the main thread in the Third Era section of this forum.

Versions are mutually exclusive. Don't try to mix them.

As for the odd numbering of versions, take it as a tribute to Tel's wild creativity Grin

ok, now that that has been cleared up, to a degree, more questions

on the download section, first era lists at the bottom 7.0 and then a 7.0 - 7.2 upgrade and then a v7 full install. That includes the 7.2 update? Also, where is the 7.3 file again?

and to end the current salvo, any reason to have the 4. , 6. etc versions, or are they all summed up by 7.3?

EDIT - Also, do you unzip the 9.0 alphas 1 -3 on top of each other, or do I just need 3 and then 3 - 4 and then 4 - 5.

I've updated the frontpage a bit. Should be more newbie friendly without the "bombastic technical terms" only grognards would remotely understand.
