Present day EMP Warfare?
mrWHO
Does US equipment/combat machines are completly invunerable/ backed up against EMP effect?
What are the methods of protection against EMP?

This post was inspired by "Goldeneye" and "War of the Worlds" use of EMP.

believe it or not other hen Big and i mean BIG Elektro magnetic fields there is nothing you can do
Weather aint neutral....

Thats why you gotta love internal combustion balistics. No electronics, just moving metal (or plastics) parts and a chemical explosion.

But nukes give off alot of emp, I wonder how that effects ships in space.

Derek: They don't.

The radiation from nuclear weapons would cause a lot of havoc, yes. But "EMP" as it's known is "electromagnetic pulse". What that means is that electrons are violently ripped from their happy orbits and forcibly pushed outwards from the explosion. They hop from atom to atom, creating a mighty huge electric current over a large radius. If electronic equipment isn't properly shielded, byebye.

Now, there are some other methods being developed today that generate only that effect, minus the nuclear fusion/fission explosion. Cool I won't go into those details, but I will say this:

There are essentially no atoms to push electrons on to in space. "EMP" is just another type of atmospheric shockwave, although one where most of the atoms stay still and do not oscillate, while the electrons are the ones doing all the work.

Sounds like you could use Carbon or Gallium shielding. Just have to make atoms content enough with their electrons to keep them from moving about. Then again, you could just simply have reactive circuts that shut down before an emp blast can harm them.
