The not-so-far FUTURE : EXPAND or DIE!!!
Vincent
Space warfare will bring in a new age of death unlike we've ever had before. I was watching a dicovery documentary show on the evolution of rockets. And it got to the point where they tested a nuclear explosion in the Earths magnetic fields [which catch radiation from the sun and sometimes create the aurora borealis when the sun releases too much radiation.] what the missle did was make a aurora but also block out all radio freequencies and even destroyed some electronics. And this was only a 4 megaton or less missle that wasn't even sent to the most powerful areas. The EM disruption caused problems thouroughout the whole pacific. Luckily fate would have it that only one test was run and not others were performed again because russia was sending a man to space [and US would be sending one too eventualy] and asked the US to stop those tests because the radiation might kill them. Also the radiation destroyed several sattelites. Now if only a 3-4 megaton nuclear missle deployed in a weaker magnetic field coult do this imagine the devestating and worldwide effect other nuclear weapons or even just orbital planetary bombing would do. Also since nothing composes in space we could in a space battle seriously destroy any future in space we have. Gundam SEED illustrated that problem. There was a huge ring of orbiting debris arodun the Earth realistically this would block out the sun and kill all life on it and block anything trying to leave Earth. Although a war in space is the fastest way to develop true, cheap, and sound ways to travel through space and live in space because wars accelerate mankinds technological expansion many times its normal progression. But we would pay a very heavy fine for technological expansion. I would rather although not a big supporter of capitalism I would rather commercial space. I honestly think that the people who are making those civilian low orbit space transportation vehicles have done more to further mankinds evolution to space than the rest of the world and especialy NASA has done since they landed on the moon and started creating the Internation Space Station. Although realistically the ultimate commercialization of space can only happen when he have cheap and efficient technology to harvest resources and to produce in space. Once a cheap and efficient way to travel is created two big steps can be taken one is to finish the space station and create a orbital production platform and the space elevator. Theoretically the space elevator is possible although hugely expensive. The carbon man made molecules known as "bucky balls" can create a material strong enough for a space elevator.

So basically to sum it down my theory of how to commercialize space is

1. Find a efficient way to travel through space at least as far as the asteroid belt.

2. Create a raw materials industry in space.
3. Finish the space station and a production platform and the space elevator.
4. Once materials can be transported from Earth to the platform we will be able to create ships in zero-g enviroments and take out the huge cost of the fuel it takes to escape earths intertia.

...From that point there will be a natrual evolution generation by generation to space.

Space truly is the final frontier. Any living organism the outgrows a certain container and cannot escape will devour, destroy and kill itself unless it can expand. Each time humanity needed to expand in the past they found some new continent thats poorly if not at all populated and expanded. As the earths population grows and grows we have one of 2 choices expand or die.

If you don't belive me about the population killing itself I can't give you an exact source but it was an animal documentary in Africa where elephants live in a volcano valley so they are surronded by impassable volcanic walls and they live in side with no predators and enough food. The problem is they have no new DNA so they keep inbreeding and inbreeding and they are devolping genetic defects and diseases and are dying out this way. Humanity's gene pool is huge and our container [The Earth] is even bigger and it would take a very very long time to die of this way but the Earth has a natrual capacity of how many of us it can take and in the natrual process of things the more population there is the more things happend natrual or manmade to contain this population. I saw this chart in my history books a couple years back where it showed all the population booms of the world and every time the population grew too fast and there were too many [usualy because life got better too fast] something happend to equalize that population ie. Bubonic plague, crusades, WWI and WWII, currently I honestly belive that we are within a decade or two at most of a WWIII. Currently our enviroment if not other humans is trying to kill us. It's been the 24th tropical storm, there was a devestating tsunami, new devestating diseases that are just a couple of evolutions [viruses evolve] away from creating a pandemic [avian flu], also earthquakes and other such things. So to conclude humanity has two choices EXPAND [into space] or DIE [and we have many many options of how we wanna die]. I'm all for survival of the species so I say space. [Only once we've moved to space I wouldn't mind there being space wars as long as they are in space and not around the Earth, Moon or the sun or the asteroid belt.

Grin I have too much time on my hands.

Congrats, you've just oulined a series of books: RED MARS, BLUE MARS and GREEN MARS and a graphic Novel called PLANETES which followed a group of garbage collectors who's jobs were to collect space debris around earth.

Now, the likely hood that you can put enough crap in to block the sun, is well..... fiction. Do the math. Take the diameter of earth, add about 200 more kilometers and then calculate the surface area of that sphere.

And you're forgetting the transition from our type 0 society to a type 1 will cause emmense troubles socially (thankfully we're at .73), that is, if we can make it to Type 1 (being that we produce enough energy that actually hits the earth every minute)

I figure we can skip the full on type 1 thing by getting to another planet and going towards a type 2 stage (collecting all the energy produced by the sun, or creating the equivilant amount)

Anyways, I'm quite tired.... I hope I've made sense.... or provided something. I am not intending to be cynical or negative.

I've seen those books but I heard they are really confusing and that 2 and 3 suck compared to 1.

Even if you get into space you're still going to be screwed eventually, either when you run out of resources or when the universe goes bye bye.

The universe going bye bye is such a long ways from now. Don't worry about that.

And those books don't suck. It's a very good study, however fictional, a new society evolving in a new evironment. The escentially create an entire new race of humans with a new culture and social rules. It's frightning and interesting at the same time. More so when people are living to be nearly 200 years old. How do you think people hold up with that?

Running out of resources will take a very long time becuase as soon as we can extract them in space we have a whole asteroid belt plus many other planets to extract resources from. By then I'm pertty sure we could figure out a way to travel to other galaxies. I said I heard the others sucked, thats only what I heard its not my opinion. Yea the univirse dying there is not point in saying cuz thats beyond the human capacity to imagine how far off the death of the universe is. Just as it is beyond human capacity to imagine infinity.

The thing about the asteroid belt however is that asteroids are spaced appart by very large distances and they're not very big at all. It would be more economical to mine mars or even the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Not to mention Titan has an atmosphere which wouldn't take too long to alter since it is established. The problem lies with lighting things out that far from the sun. And it's cold. Oh so cold....

True I'm just saying there so much out there and running out of resources isn't a problem.

The idea of the end of this world is also far beyond the appreciation of most people, mentaly they can conceive of fire raining from the heavens or whatever, but they can percieve of the end of the universe in just the same way.
That one is more distant than the other is of little consequence beyond the life of a single person, by expanding into the universe you simply delay the inevitable.
