Armoured Division
Homdax
I have been thinking on and off about this, due to my lack of military historical knowledge and my absolute ignorance of warfare tactics.

But recently I have been reading in a little, and that caused by the excellent movie from 1970, Patton.
Timeline of his life
The famous speech

Especially one sentence about this general of WW2 catches my attention:

Quote

3d Army continues its amazing advance eventually moving faster, going farther, killing and wounding more enemy, seizing more land, and capturing more prisoners than any other army in history.

I dont know how this could be "translated" to PDS-verse, but I do know I would like some input on how to set up an strike force corresponding to what might be called an Armoured Division or similar.

I spountaneosly thought of these two vessels to begin with:
the new Lavi and Destroyers. But that might not be enough.

Lets say you should build a starting fleet with above mentioned premises, how would you proceed?
What would be the result?

Nice new topic.

I'm doing conceptual orders of battle for the V7 manuals - a naval equivalent of something like an armoured division might be a task force composed of a cruisers and battleships, like the following example:

Quote

TASK FORCE 80 (CONCEPTUAL HEAVY STRIKE)

Flagship:

1x Praetor supercarrier with 80x fighters

2x Heavy Taskgroup each with:

1x Deliverance battle carrier with 16x heavy fighters
3x LiirHra strike cruiser

6x battle frigates and/or destroyers
2x Marquess assault/escort carrier with 32x heavy fighters total
4x fire support frigates (local "artillery")

1x Reserve/Bombardment Taskgroup with:

6x Arbiter IV medium cruisers
2x Arbiter IV escort/anti fighter cruisers (operational in v7.1)
1x "Iskandah Shah" large bombardment cruiser

2x Imperator light fleet carriers
or
4x Marquess assault/escort carriers
or
1x Arcadia deep space escort/bulk carrier with a total of 64 fighters

12x special purpose frigates

Logistics arrangements:

1x Empress mobile shipyard with defensive wing of 36 fighters
6x Caravan utility frigates
4x Bishop heavy transporters

END

Logistics train is greatly simplified.

Note that this force is capable of functioning both as a carrier battle group, and a conventional capital ship formation. The two Deliverance taskgroups are the main mobile offensive punch of the task force.

"Fighters" may be either light, heavy fighters, or light corvettes.
"Special purpose frigates" may be Lavi assault ships, anti-strikecraft pickets or destroyers.

"6x battle frigates and/or destroyers"

The Lirhas are nice and fast, but I would think that your Heavy Taskgroups would be devoid of Arbiter destroyers due to their speed. They are crazy-slow. I have to assume you mean Cazadors (which are lovely).

In fact, other than tactical hypering (when resources allow), I currently only use Arbiters in defensive positions, usually as heavy defenders for the shipyard (since they can keep up with it).

Overall, the Heavy Strike Group is very appealing. And it would crash my system
Let me run some upgrades before I try to load that sucker...

I should be able to pump that up. Will have to print out recipe though...

Note that the term "destroyer" today refers to a vessel larger than a frigate, designed for a fully offensive role, but smaller than a cruiser.

The Arbiter is a "fleet cruiser" with the designation CF - destroyers refer to enhanced Bloodhound gunships and the Tulwar/Cazador series.

For the in-game scope of PDS, we will of course be operating on the taskgroup scale, with some support from the rest of the TF.

Yup - I got stuck with the old thinking, Arbiters as DD's instead of Cruisers... my bad.

I'm really enjoying the game these days; I play mostly as the IVF, with some forays as the Sobani. I'm restricting myself currently to nothing larger than the starting carrier (except for what I can capture!), plus lots of SC and frigates. And Destroyers Harobeam

I'm still waiting for some stock to go up in price so I can sell it and buy a new video card... until then I just minimize my game and try not to Save/Load unless I have 20 minutes to spare...

Cheers!
