One of the episodes of StarTrek Voyager I remember with some excitement is when they got hold of the Armour tech. The Intrepid class did not come with any above average hull plating, but seeing how they transformed and "folded" up the armour in the episode still makes me want to see this effect in more venues. Question is, is this at all possible to do in a Mod, or are we confined to more or less static ship models?

What I would assume is the way you would implement this, depending on how much effort you wanted to put into it, is that you would use the 'module' system of HW2. You have the outside of the ship, and then lets say the saucer section is one module, you can select it and tell it to build the one armor module. When it is finished, you have the module covering the saucer section. This 'should' work with the hitbox of the module soaking the damage from the shots until death before hull damage begins really happening. You could segment this as much as you wanted. Top of saucer, bottom of saucer, top left, top right , etc. Of course, this is likely to lead to some issues we had way back when (not sure which version) where it was annoyingly difficult to select ships because every gun and thing was it's own module, so you kept selecting the modules instead of the ships. I forget how we ended up fixing that. |

I don't think it was ever really fixed. Ships with too many external subsystems (Al-Khalid :argh basically had to be drag selected rather than clicked on. |

Yeah, I see that behaviour in game. Tad annoying. That would be many modules on one ship...or maybe some kind of closely attached forcefield effect that emulates some kind of metallic glow (if anything). Only one module for that, think Field Frigate on steroids. Terminator Frigate...

I thought at one point we did have the sort of Defense Field module thing going for some ships. |
