PDS and Windows 7
davidofwales
So Windows 7 is much more idiot proof that the previous windows operating systems and this thread is basically to get help with PDS with windows 7

I am trying to install PDS on a windows 7 and am having trouble adding the extension -overrideBigFile to the Homeworld short cut

A silly suggestion, but in your screenshots it looks like you may have left out the space before -overrideBigFile in the shortcut. Try adding a single space and seeing if that helps? (:

your shortcut should be.. "C:\Program Files(x86)\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -overrideBigFile

try copy & pasting that into the target line of your shortcut, and hopefully it should work. Homeworld 2 is very temperamental on Windows 7 from what I've heard, so you may have to run it in compatibility mode for Windows NT (don't ask). XD

Tested the image link and it works.

I concur with MagneticNorth.

So I tried adding a space after the "" and that got rid of that error
Now when I double click to open the game it goes to a black screen like its opening and then closes the program without displaying any error messages

MagneticNorth
Yeah, I'd say that's Windows 7 being funny.. I get the same problem on Vista.

Right click on your shortcut, go to Properties, then click on the Compatibility tab. Try running it in compatibility mode for Windows NT, and that should hopefully get it running.

davidofwales
I ran it in compatibility mode for NT XP vista and 98 and the same thing happened with each of them

Hmm.. well, I'm not sure what to suggest, I don't personally have Windows 7. Did Homeworld 2 run alright before you installed PDS?

It's worth updating your graphics card drivers if you haven't recently - that may help.

If it doesn't, I'd recommend having a look on the Relicnews forums. there's probably someone there who'll be able to help Pfft

I do not recall having started HW2 in 7 either. Maybe I should, in order to provide some answers. Then again I have no clue as to how the game will deal with dual gfx cards either.

hmmm...

Edit

Actuallt there seems to be a W7 thread with some bits of info that may be relevant:

Yeah it started fine both with and without the patch to 1.1 in Windows 7

davidofwales
Hey so i just got it to work I had to uninstall Homeworld 2 and then reinstall it and then open PDS without the 1.1 patch

MagneticNorth
And it works? You can play the game and everything? I didn't think PDS would work without the 1.1 patch..

Windows 7 seems to have had the unlikely effect of making me like Vista more.. XD
