So what/whom do we have?
TelQuessir
Basically we are starting anew, it's a one man show from now on. Which, I admit, is good. I can concentrate on doing what I want to put in game, and (prepare to be disappointed), it won't include graphical incredibility.

What I want to do is attention to detail. Ships are as again in vanilla PDS, not tissue paper. 200m is huge, its almost the size of a real world aircraft carrier. And yes, if there's going to be a battlewagon on the map its the mothership herself. And you'd best be staying away from her.

That does sort of mean V11B8 is pretty much close to the mark, but the CPU intensiveness is just plain horrid. Not everyone has a dual core 3.6 with a top of the range graphics card.

And so with that stated down and proper I'd like to start anew. And end up with something like the space battle in the opening scene of Star Wars Ep.3. With every little sound and graphics effect included.

Who's with me?

Not that it matter much when it comes to development.

But I think ruling out the graphical update is a mistake.
Care to explain why in more detail?

Given the limited time and resources its better to have something solid where you can rely on, instead of new graphics which require specialised knowhow. I do have plans for graphical improvements but leave the new shaders to teams with better logistics. I prefer the tried and true stuff.

Elukka
Ok i really am not that knowledgeable in this field, but i don't think the new graphics are impossibly hard to do as quite a lot of people who i don't think are graphics specialists are doing it for default HW2 ships.

I am curious which style the new versions of PDS will be in terms of how they are loaded onto the game. Will they be the way with all the folders or the way with the .big file?

What kind of help exactly are you looking for tel? I wouldn't mind spending some time with this mod.
Failure is not an option. It's bundled with your software.

I'll be here to cheer you guys on and repeatedly tell you how awesome what you are doing is. However, I regretfully have to say I have no modding expertise whatsoever...So I can't really help you guys in that respect.

Um. Some sort of honorable title.

So you see that's the PDS operating culture. One person does all the work the rest shouldn't start complaining or worse, trying to "help" by being to enthiusiastic in messing with said culture. XD

So long as we are clear on the.. distribution of labour I would have a lot of interest in redoing PDS to the quality standard that was lost a long time ago with too many ideas and ships.

prithvi19
So are you starting from scratch from the original files or are you starting off from v11?

Everything new, with some resources drawn from V11 (like some of the more exotic ship configs)

prithvi19
Nice. So i was wondering if there's any chance of the sensor and detection ranges going down a little bit? Like unless you have a specialized craft in the area or something of the sort. No changes to the weapon ranges of course. I thought that might solve the problem of having ships rushing all over the map.

I am zinking:hmm: that making the senors range go down would be a bad idea. True, your ships do charge off or as i put in another thread "go 'Whoopee!' and charge off too get blown up" But in PDS it seems that the battles are kinda all over the place. Not meaning there messy, but they kinda float around. And you dont want your ships to not notice a battle until the stray missiles are crippling your resource operation.

One time to missiles from across the map end up taking out 4 resource guys and a fighter. I was like "Vwhat?!?!" So awsome Clap

So anyways. In my opinion i think the sensor range is good. But im not a very, long term player, with the 8 posts and 2 months of PDS expierence.Sad

But its all good....
May the PDS be with you.

Missiles across the map are probably those basic strategic level weapons found on the BBX and LHX. These can benefit from greater sensor range than what's implemented in V11. The missiles do re-acquire targets of opportunity if the designated one has been destroyed so I guess they overshot and their huge velocity took them into the resource base.

Basically V11 has a lot of "good ideas" but the battlespace got a bit messed up in the betas.

Thus the new PDS would be more like the pace of Star Wars movies than Battlestar Galactica - devastating weapons at low rates of fire, capital ship battles are more like standing off to trade heavy weapons fire and fighter/bombers in an attempt to weaken the opposition before a decisive broadside.

The new version might be visually attuned to the movies but its technicalities would take on a more realisitc approach; lasers as a weapon system have long ranges but little capacity as an assault weapon but take on a valuable anti-strike and precision attack device. Plasma ordnance are devastating but usable practically only at what passes for point blank range in theoretical space combat ranges. And they're huge. Its the same issue with massdrivers but MDs are 'safer', more versatile, able to conduct barrage-fire against enemy formations then switch to solid slugs to finish off crippled or stationary targets.

Missiles are still the most efficient weapons in terms of their compactness but the warheads can be intercepted, and missile-specialised ships are vulnerable once their ready-fire rounds are expended.

That's the basic rundown and you can mix and match for more exotic weapons that try to minimise their technological weaknesses and to add additional capability (such as deploying missiles through a massdriver).

Plenty of diversity and plenty of new eye and ear candy as a squadron of Hiigaran torpedo destroyers ambush Vaygr capital ships out of sensor stealth, hyper V munitions streaking unerringly from turntable launchers. Streaks of fire followed by blinding flashes signal the detonation of multiple fusion warheads amid the enemy formation - the strike is partially effective and several boats can be seen drifting out of control as the rest pursue the torpedo destroyers, their 8 tubes expended, fend of fighter and frigate attacks with specially-mounted rear weapons.

Out of hyperspace a pair of Hiigaran direct-action cruisers arrive to save the day, sweeping the sky clear of Vaygr strike units with laser fire and close in bravely to practically point blank range of the enemy battleships to employ their quartet of prow-mounted heavy plasma guns to lethal effect as their heavy armour and point defenses keep the opponent's close in fire at bay.

The small rag tag band would not seek to destroy the invaders' battle squadron, indeed, they can't, but nothing stopped them from wreaking maximum havoc as the torpedo destroyers wheeled around, their tubes having reloaded, and fired a final crescendo of destruction upon the immobilised battle line before withdrawing to the safety of hyperspace alongside the battered but victorious assault group, setting back Vaygr invasion plans by a few months.

Before you're asking, no, these are totally new HODs.

Hate to ask a question when you just said "Before you're asking," but whats a HOD XD. I feel like a newb once again but everyones a newb at some point.Wink:

So your talking the fights are more tactical and less sit back and watch the fireworks? Will definetly cut into the screenshotz but I love battles that leave you mentally exhausted. The battles where its build up, massive fight, than your leftovers destroy the enemy arnt as much fun.

And speaking of those turntable launchers. Does that mean we could watch them spin?!?Pfftray: But that'd probably be extremely difficult.
Also, with the laza's. Does this mean that the long range Ion beams are going to turn more into strike craft taker outers? Pretty cool!

Cheers  So far this sounds amazing.

May the PDS be with you.

That 3 letter acronym means ship model and more specifically the ship loadout and appearance. And yes i'm going to focus on small details and intricate quality. I want to deploy finished ships as works of art, and battles a macabre dance with foil and saber as opposed to yet another bar brawl with paper aeroplanes.

*falls from the sky*

What the who, now?

Oh, you mean we're starting over? No 15,000 advanced ion beams on a single battleship?

I guess we'll see if I have the time...

EDIT: I wonder if the code would still be familiar to me...
