Extreme Ingame lag on High performance system?
Vanguard
Hey guys, been a while since i've posted here =)

Recently upgraded my PC to a Q6600 Quadcore processor, 8800GT Graphics card, 4 gigs of RAM, great new Gigabyte motherboard. So it can handle anything else i throw at it impeccably. However having just reinstalled HW2 and the latest version of PDS 11, i am faced with tremendous ingame lag. One minute it'll be smooth as silk, even in heavy combat, but then every other second it'll pause for a second and lag like hell.

I'm really unsure why this could be. It seems to happen when an ion cannon or some kind of bright glowing beam is fired.

Any ideas what this could be caused by? As it is it's unplayable Sad

Thanks dudes
Rawr.

By the way, my sound seems terribly crackly in-game now, almost every sound or voice has this awful crackling going on behind it. It's fine in any other game.

Another thing i've noticed is that there aren't explosions for some capital ships. Just sent a destroyer into enemy space and when it was destroyed it just disappeared without the usual impressive explosion.

This has (most surely) nothing to do with the rest of your problem. I encounter this phenomenon since PDS 7. Sometimes ships "explode", sometimes they vanish unnoticed. I was unable to evaluate any kind of model for when happens what but it never compromised my play (in fact, sometimes I was lucky about it, especially when it did not happen and I was "blind" for several seconds due to many ships blowing up one after another... HW2 makes this explosion bright enough to hurt my eyes even from sensor manager ^^).

It has nothing to do with you're setup. The short answer is that PDS is doing things with (and to) the engine it was never designed for. Basically the engine is overloaded with data. There's really nothing the mod team can do about that, so you'll just have to live with it, sadly.

But the previous version of this mod worked absolutely fine and my old system was really middle-end performance wise. The framerate dropped a bit here and there during intense combat but never these large pauses.

Yes, well... this system handles PDS 11.8.01 fine:

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
768 MB DDR-Ram
nVidia GeForce FX 5200
16x CD/DVD-Rom

May I state that this is "a little bit" less than Vanguard's machine bears? ^^
I remember a similar effect in "Black & White" however: With my actual computer it lags very much, which it did not with the previous, even weaker hardware (which I blew up accidentally ^^).
So, either it is a driver issue (too new driver) or a hardware issue (too new hardware) or a system issue (Vista).

Well I'm running Vista 64-bit, SLI'd 8600's, 2 gigs RAM, Dual-core 4800 AMD, game is kinda laggy, but completely playable.

This makes me think we should all post our specs though.

XP, NVidia 7600GT, 2 GB RAM, AMD 64 3500+. Never experienced serious lag, only when really pumping up 100's of ships.

Doesn't help that I'm using up so much CPU and memory power with Azureus and a truly massive list of torrents all the time in the background probably.

Wow, and you guys' systems are kind of middle ended at today's gaming standards, and can run it moderately fine. I on the other hand deliberately went for a very high power gaming rig for today's standards. it should be able to eat this mod for breakfast.

There's another thing i've noticed though. First of all, every single loading screen is scrambled. they're all split up into many horizontal strips that are out of alignment. Also another thing is that the major reactor explosions seem to expand in a sphere, but the sphere texture is exactly the same - scrambled into lines. Perhaps something became corrupted in the .big file? I've reinstalled the game twice. once from the disk, and once from a torrent that i downloaded just in case my disk had been damaged. Still have the problem.

I'll try the .zip file.

No... that didn't work. What the hell is going on.

That's what the loading screens are like, and the reactor explosion effects have a similar effect.

Reinstalling HW2 and everything works 90% of the time in these situations. Unfortunately, that's the only advice I can give you.
Welcome to the internet

Well i did already say i had reinstalled the game from two different sources. Thanks anyway.

This is the explosion error by the way: aycu07.webshots.com/image/44446/2005802472405298200_fs.jpg

It kinda looks cool actually...

Yeah i admit it does kind of look kool. But if it's causing the lag i'm willing to sacrifice it.

Are you running Vista? Vista and lots of games don't mix well.

Then again, I'm on a Mac. So that's not from personal experience. Lots of my friends can't get games working right on Vista though

Vanguard
Oh good lord no, i'm not very much a fan of vista. I ran it on a virtual machine last year and didn't like it all that much. Some parts are alright but i don't like how controlling and dominating it is. Not to mention how much it lowers the IQ of PC users and treats them like idiots. To name a few.

I'm sticking to my rugged reliable XP =)

Thing is, you really need to know a bit about how Windows use resources.
A game is always a big performance hit, so always minimize (as in shut down) all running applications and control your running services/software. That's basic.
As I type this I have 42 processes running (including anti virus and browser and such) using some 500MB DDR2 and practically no CPU.
