11.8 Ship Loadouts
Dafeaz
Couple of questions. New to 11.x, so bare with me.

Why do ship descriptions no longer display their loadouts, allowing us to look over what exactly we're deploying instead of a general description?

Also, why does the HGN Marjiirian BBH mount a 12GW DEW, while the smaller LH-X Scharnhorst BLG mounts a 24GW DEW?

And finally, what exactly is the Strategic Bombardment Array mounted aboard the Marjiirian? Is it just a really big gun?

Here's a nice quick response for you:

1. Ship descriptions used to be very very verbose in PDS Classic but this is discontinued because the ship's capabilities can be discerned more easily with the phrase "armed with heavy plasma weapons for close attack missions" than a few lines listing the ship's many assault weapons. Because as time goes on we tend to add complimentary equipment to give the ship better capability (like external weapon racks or a newer mark of the main guns) and it will pose a nightmare to update when we did so.

Imagine changing all the ships' build descriptors individually because you retrofitted the Fleet with a new type of self-defense autocannon.

2. Majiirian BBH lasers are the pre Invasion type chemical lasers while the LH-X sports new generation particle beams that while having a shorter effective range than coherent-light weapons, is much deadlier in close quarters as a plasma based device.

Also the Majiirian's lasers are secondary to the SBAs, which implies a strategic bombardment hybrid railgun/missile array designed to deploy independent multi-warhead attack vehicles ballistically against capital ships (or entire flotillas of smaller craft). An autocannon with conventional munitions isn't able to redirect its shells in flight to intercept at anything outside of extremely short range, a modern fusion warship's evasive capability.

A missile tends to use most of its onboard fuel for initial velocity and suffers the same fate as the massdriver round because once it runs out of fuel it becomes a ballistic shell. Fast capital ship drives are more efficient, so the ship usually can feint the missile so that it makes a lot of trajectory corrections until it runs out of fuel.

Solution to this issue, Hiigaran style, is to accelerate a missile payload with a massdriver (using it as a first stage) so the munition can pursue the target with its entire fuel load. Missile range to enable has also been increased so that the missiles actively pursue targets closer to it so as to increase hit rate vs evasive targets, and to minimise detectability of the missile itself (active target acquisition methods used tells the enemy they're under missile attack way before the missile actually arrives).

And that's what we'll say about the SBA in PDS documentation.

Alright. makes sense. A good replacement for the standard kinetic weaponry of the supercapitals. Combine the best aspects of missile launchers and rail cannons.

My question is, just what kind of destructive force are these SBAs launching? I'd assume by their rate of fire that it's something fairly significant, as most ships in the Hiigaran navy seem to be adopting smaller 255mm (10.04 in) rapid fire cannons, which while destructive in their own right, are still much smaller than naval guns used in modern battleships (yes I realize these are autocannons, but we're also talking about warships with the reactor strength to breach the laws of physics for hyperspace jumps). Just an example, the Russian AK-130 120mm has a ROF of 60 RPM, and they aren't even using rail technology.

So what kind of missiles are those bad boys launching?

I have a question. Why is it that PLSR-1GW-Fixed and PLSR-2GW-Fixed (and possibly others.) all have an accuracy if 0 against fighters? They shoot every single shot just under the target. Even if I fix the weapon files and turn the accuracy up to 100%, there's no change.

I attached like 10 1GW and 10 2GW to one fighter squadron as a test and not one beam hit the enemy I-3P TKH's.

Issue is in HW2 engine... Seems like other modders too have problems getting fixed-mount beams to work on fighters.

But we have lots of better anti-strike assets than the Blade interceptor so who cares ^^
