As far as I know, EMP stands for "Electro-Magnetic Pulse." If there's a magnet, there's a magnetic field, whether in vacuum or in the atmosphere. Now, EMP is just an electro-magnetic field that, well, pulses at a certain frequency. Doesn't matter if there's atmosphere there or not.
Well, people normally put something creative here. Hrm.

Technically, if you dissect the term, then yes it's simply a field that's pulsing. However, that is not the case here. The term specifically refers to a large electromagnetic wavefront that totally screws anything with flowing electrons, and is usually generated by nuclear weapons. It does require atoms or moleculues fairly close together, as they are in an atmosphere, to propagate. I should mention that HW-modern electronics are probably nothing of the sort. Optical and quantum computing, or something even more advanced. |

An EMP will exist in space and will fry unshielded electronics (as the use 'magnetic moments' to store information by altering the angle of thier dipole intereactions - have no idea what this really means tho ). I had a look on the 'net to see what effects atmosephere would have on the propagation of an EMP but couldnt find anything concrete - does anybody have a cite of a place i can look?Anyhow, its easy to shieled electronics from this kind of attack (if you make an EMP generator powerfull enough to get through this shielding you will begin to damage your own ship too) and the HW races probobly dont use electronics much anymore. Optical or quantom computers would be pretty much immune to EMP (although technically optical computers could be fried in the same way using a Nutrino Pulse Generator). Basically, whether they work in space or not, EMPs a pretty useless in Homeworld. Rampent Kitty-basher

Why would neutrinos interrupt a stream of photons? |

They dont as such. I have no idea why/how but nutrinos go very fast and can penterate solid matter - apparantly, to stop nutrinos you would need lead armour a light year thick! One will go through the earth without even slowing. The only way to detect them is as they emit photons when they interact with normal matter (to detect them scientists have build huge tanks of water deep underground and watch for photonic trails as they pass through the water). A nuclear explosion or a dedicated nutrino generator produces a lot of nurinos, these are practically harmless due to there abilitys to pass through matter unhindered. However, if your are using a purly optical computer (i.e. one that uses photons to carry out the calculations or to store data) a nutrino passing through the processor/data-storage units would introduce extra photons into the sysem - basically corrupting the processes/data http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrino Rampent Kitty-basher

Quick notes: YES EMP works just fine in vaccuum in real life. No, EMP would probably not affect photonic computers (or whatever they use in HW) that much. EMP is fairly trivial to shield with superconductors (if you can go FTL making a reasonable superconductor is probably not hard). Yes there's limits based on the surface free energy, but that's easily handled by using multiple layers. Neutrinos going through a lightyear of lead will still get through with something like 50% success I believe. The interaction cross-section of neutrinos is very small, and they only interact with quarks (in nucleii) not leptons (such as elecrons) or photons. Nuclei are incredibly dense. Something like a neutron star would most likely absorb neutrinos very well, as would armor based on the concept of nuclear bonding (not sure if HW has any of that) ===================================

The monster i have unleashed.....![]() Would a round shell(cannon ball) do more damage on impact then a bullet shaped projectile?- the reason why i love the gauss cannon so is this one drawing i saw of the round ball literally pushing the mechs armor apart on impact and if i was in space that would be a very terrifying weapon if used against light armor ships. The thought of a mass of pure dense metal being propeled at ungoldy speeds then hitting the bubble you call your ship makes one wish for peace. If anyone has seen the B5 weapons the centauri use could they explain its workings, its like no cannon i have seen. My rough guess of its working is createing a very unstable ball of energy held by a dual rail system then propeling it forward towards the target, once it hits solid mass it de-stablizes and creates a very mean explosion. I would immagine its like shooting your reactor then haveing it go critical. Would it be possible to have a multi stage fireing beam frigate/corvette?, 4 turrents 2 in front 2 in back- lets say its a frigate- gos in with both beams blazeing then passes the target while the back fireing beams continue fireing until the front ones can be brought to bear. I was imspired by a gundam seed episode, this would differ from the normal ships since there would be a pilot and then a gunner for non stop flying while the 4 turrnets continued to pick targets, could just use the current HGN beam frigate but ion cannons would be its main armament instead of pulsars. |

I think it would be nice, if this mod had cruise missles. Like int he Complex mod. Taht would be fun ![]() |

Cruise missiles would be easily intercepted by CIWS systems, and we already have similar systems in a sense. Haven't Tel and I said stuff about checking first? A starlight sharpshot magical girl!

Large armored missles that do devasting damage instead of plinking? o.o |

You couldn't possibly put enough armor on a missile to save it from CIWS fire - not without making it as big and expensive as a fighter or corvette. 'Devastating damage' would require a warhead as big as a fighter, too. Entirely impractical, sorry. "This is tactical control..."

Skipper missles ala Wing Commander? And a thougt i put on the old boards, how about a ship whose function is soley to overwhelm PDS fire? To allow torpedo shps and fighter/bombers to do there work? |

That's what the new destroyers are for! With some cunning management they can actually screen your attack column from battleship fire. As such, that's why you have capital ships backing up a fighter attack on an enemy capital ship - to hold the target down and suppress defensive fire. The Tulwar II plays like a Millenium Falcon if you task them to attack a BB's escort fighters - while her squadron mates can fire on the BB with less risk to themselves as it attacks the closer target. The Vagyr QR-1C destroyer is outfitted very well for precision attack roles with her quad medium pulse ion cannon array - performs similar to the "Tactical Destroyer" from Nexus, if you've played that. I was just wondering if it is possible for a ship to roll on his/her(depending on country) y axis, swapping ventral and dorsal surface? and if it has any effect. I mean if some 2 capships engage each other in broadsides then could in the middle of fight a ship roll to bring undamaged weaponry on his opponent? or is it unpractical in current setting? |

No offense, but, how do you roll shipyard or PoH? Sometimes I would really like to have shipyard bay not exposed directly to enemy attack. |

PoH - waypoint move order to one flank, the ship will bank to turn. Shipyard - unfortunately having it do semi-aerobatics will lead to a lot of gameplay consequences. |

It would be as large as a fighter, granted, but with a HV-engine it should be able to get through...together with LDS. Fighter survive close range action - fairly - well, so a similar sized missile should be able to do so as well, especially if it is used in saturation fire. The more interessting question would be how to use it properly - why invest the ressources on a long range weapon system, if you can have a much more flexible fighter squadron for roughly the same price? |

In case one happens to be operating without fighter support. Could happen. |

I have a defense field interdictor missile - which can work. No stopping a one-shot laser system or something like that but it reeks of the "laserhead" concept - nothing wrong I know, but I will prefer to leave it for the upcoming tech generations. Feel free to include in fiction in the meantime, within realistic parameters of course. |
