Missile trails
yasotay
If it does not kill the FPS, it would be nice.

Ill keep this post as a a tracker of all the ships i have the effect on. Right now, im using the "dmg_damage_puff_combo_frigate" and the "dmg_damage_cloud_puff_spray" for the effects. Making a new effect seems a little out of scope for me right now. Still a newbie at this stuff Pfft. But if i do get something better later i can just change the effect in the events file. Im just trying to get all the effects and markers and whatnots placed and operational right now. These effects basically make large battles messy, in a very pretty way.

As far as framerates go, i have tried out a full on 14(hgn) vs 18(vgr) strikecraft melee with all the trails turned on (engine all missiles, everything) and the avg framerate dropped by 2 (36 to 34 for me). Not really a big hit in my opinion.

Here are my specs and setting (the relevant ones at least),
CPU: 2.8mgz pentium 4 hyperthreading
GPU: 7600gs
RAM: 1gb ddr2
Anistropic: 8x
Antialiasing: none (4AA for the occasional deathwish)
Texture Detail: highest
Resolution: 1280x1024
Game graphics settings: All on or high

not the best, but definitely not the worst either.

Ships effects applied to,
HIIGARAN (complete)
hgn_interceptor
hgn_lsf
hgn_hft
hgn_attackbomber
hgn_attackbomberelite (the heavier version)
hgn_assaultcorvette
hgn_cth (Kopesh class)
hgn_pulsarcorvette (Lavi class)
VAYGR (complete)
vgr_interceptor
vgr_bomber
vgr_heavyinterceptor
vgr_lancefighter
vgr_missilecorvette
vgr_lasercorvette
vgr_shamshiriictg (Failaka class)
vgr_shamshiriicth
vgr_shamshiriictl

The messy battlefield. This is actually a very mild rendition.

I think im gonna have to let the damage effects go Sad. I tried out these files on an older computer i have and it was absolute murder. seriously, the game died. The fps drops were way more severe than on my comp. So Im gonna put this on the back burner for now.

Im gonna see if i can help suntzu and mostlyharmless with the sp campaign.

ill continue with this if anyone wants me to but i dont think this can be realistically implemented.

That does not seem to be a valid argument to me. Older computers suffer a lot anyway with PDS.

Also don't forget that we may improve fluidity by doing other things like simplifying lower models (ie getting rid of subsystems, but also by tuning certain weapon settings).

At least you should let us try the files on our own computers and see if they can handle it.

oh im all for implementing this. Actually Im all done putting the stuff in, just tinkering around right now. Ive made a couple more changes. Again, personal taste. Ive changed the effect of the hgn_pulsarfighter to 'laser' to differentiate it from the bomber icas and ive put in the vgr_lightplasmalance weapon in the pioneer class interceptor so that it can atleast dent the hulls of some of the hgn ships.

Turning down the number of subsystems will go a long way with framerates. After we give the sp campaign a little shakeup maybe we should focus on that next. Because really thats the best thing that can happen to v7.3 right now.

Ive attached the .EVENT files necessary to get the strikecraft all fired up. Ive also attached the missile folder for anyone who wants to try out the missile trails. Let me know how it goes.

By the way, I take no responsibility for broken/smoking computer as a direct result of this. Use at your own risk...Grinead:. Just kidding, the fps drops arent really that bad.

EDIT: It wont let me attach the zip file . Says its an invalid filetype or size. Its only 498kb.

Mostly harmless
Use rar I think that works better and remove numbers? Had similar. Bet there is a sticky somewhere with all this.

Noob question: how to turn off engine trails? I need it to reduce my goddamn lag.
TFL always rocked.

prithvi19
find the following line of code near the end of the *.SHIP file.

setEngineTrail(NewShipType,0,0,"trail_ribbon.tga",0.1,0.5,0.025,4)

See where the second zero is after NewShipType? Thats the length of the trail in seconds, as in how long a certain point on the trail stays visible. Vanilla HW2 is 3 i believe. Set it to zero as seen here to eliminate trails.

This also works on missiles. Find the approprite *.MISS file in the missiles folder and change it around.

DiabLoTFL
Thanks a lot.

PS huh... it works only after big zoom out. With closer zoom engine trails are still there.

TFL always rocked.

prithvi19
0_o really? Never happened with me. Its visible only at one certain angle at a certain depth. Not all the time when you are zoomed in.

Note that this doesnt take the trail out physically. Just doesnt render it, which should be good enough. To completely take out the trail you will have to edit the hod for the ship and delete the trail.

Sun Tzu
Instead of editing all ship files, you should rather tweak tuning.lua. There you can can remove all trails for any and all ships.

Btw prithvi, did you post the file that was initially rejected by the site?

DiabLoTFL
Well, hell... I don't know how to decompress lua files with the RDN tools.. I just got Archive.exe work without any help but that's all I did with it Pfft
TFL always rocked.

prithvi19
Well gee thx for telling me that sun tzu Pfft. I still cant attach the stupid file. I need to roll back some experimental changes ive been doing anyways. Im on spring break right now and i dont have HW2 on this computer. After i get back to school do you think i can just email it to you and you can post it?

Homdax
Please make sure your file name.extension is lowercase, no spaces, and no special characters.

GR?tfiLe tra]l.ExE will not work, even if f-ng Windows allows it.
Here, it must be: greatfiletrail.exe (or *.rar in Your case).
