Hey, didn't I make a fleet composition on the old site? I forget which fleet I did... I wish I could find my original entries on the 12th, 56th, 78th, and a few others...Yours isn't bad, though. The numbers in the double digits (aside from 15) had a little to do with the way I organised the Nabaal Navy before we decided that the Hiigaran Navy was a united force. At least I think. |

Thorin I will look around and see if I can find the fleet comp you did. Your nominclature was Fleet X Task Force 52 -54 or something like that. An I do think you used the 15th as the example. His organizations are a bit 'heavier' than yours. |

Looks pretty similar, actually. If I remember right, I think I took some information this guy posted to do the original. I don't think I went as deep as to name the capital ships, though...and he may or may not have put more carriers in. I remember that I attached some core ships to the subdivisions, instead of having them all as the core of the fleet. |

I do have an archive of the old site and have a link that bypasses the penguin-mayhem redirector. So I can probably dig it up for you. If properly motivated. |

Well it might be logical for each division to have a command ship and some elements that would be habitually assigned. However I have just realized that the specialized nature of the divisions might trend against having a force mix that can be assigned per the task. As to properly motivating the Glorious Leader... this is the best fleet tactical discussion in a while. ![]() |

There's only one force in fiction that I could think of that could happily and functionally split up into task groups at a moment's notice. Guess it and you get a prize. Or an e-pie. Not sure yet. Most of the heavier war ships I assigned to the TFs weren't much heavier than the frigates that composed them. light carriers and light cruisers, and a few heavier cruisers mixed in where a force's specialty dictated. I think I had an Arbiter with the fire support task force. |

We tend to naturally think that fighters, the smallest ships, should be most common in a fleet, likewise more frigates than capital ships. In a real world scenario the opposite is just as likely to be possible, with the trend of creating units to achieve specific operational roles. For instance short range small craft are a liability to a interstellar cruiser force (but good to carry a few along for support roles), while a capital ship in a fast attack group merely drags down its mobility. So we should look at specialist units too, and not just multi-role ones like we usually do. |

Indeed it might very well be that the smaller craft have a primary role not of fighting ship battles but to conduct operations in and around planets and moons where small might be better. |

Relaxation - I might suggest/recommend but one change, that the 15th Fleet not be considered a 'Reserve Fleet' it has been canon since the earliest days of HW2 (well before publishing) that the 15th was a major fleet within the HGN. A small thing I know, but happiness to us elderly types. Might we consider the addition of a Frontier Force? Primarliy a frigate and corvette based organization that is focused on patrolling the frontier away from the combat areas. |

A frontier force, I'm guessing, would be a group of fast cruisers (LiirHra, not Arbiters) and possibly an Imperator (with Imperator full of TwinEdge Avengers, of course). Possibly some Lavi light frigates attached on the outer hulls of the LiirHra if that works.

Frontier Force probably bases its order of battle around fast ships with good sensor reach and skirmishing capability (focusing on range and specialised hitting power). This said they in our galactic situation are best off as professional policing and interception forces, rather than the colonial militia image that their name implies. |

Colonial militia would probably be best done out with slower picketing vessels, such as Arbiter-type vessels and an orbital defence station as a strikecraft carrier. Probably old-type Khopesh drones equipped with some sort of anti-strikecraft cannon and Thunderbolts as anti-capital strikecraft.

Sixth-rate militia ships are fun to play with ![]() But don't diss those short range defensive craft - something like the Iskandar Shah with super-heavy beam weapons on the main turrets would be totally unstoppable. As I said to (was it Relaxation?) on MSN the Arbiter is admirably suited for monitor (defensive cruiser) roles - and these need not be manned at all if you got access to first-rate ship automation tech. As Nerdfish would say, after all new colonies are best started with military forces and you would not want anything but a first-rate defense force deployed around it. So that's another factor to frontier and planet defense forces being the cream of the technological crop, and not the low end of it. No crap about Millenium Falcons running blockades - you'll probably see/hear this on the GUARD channel instead: Planetary Defense Command to unidenfied ship, stand down within fifteen seconds or be terminated. The Frontier Force I agree would be supplied with fast ships with very good sensors. I would think that their policing skills would be used to deal with pirates and small raider elements, while their scouting role would be to alert larger fleet elements if larger incursions occurred. While they would draw from local elements (since they know their galactic backyard better) I am not sure that a large star nation would have a militia mentality about a force like this. Conversley they would likely be near last on the list for new equipment in a war, and might rely on materials that are cast off by the frontline combatants. |

That indeed is true given strategic offensive doctrine - and the first place obsolete ships go to are defensive forces. Yet with hyperspace technology you could arrive in the enemy rear lines with an entire fleet (see Shiva Option) with a high surprise factor. So the main force defenders will need to be strong enough themselves to withstand attacks by themselves for a period of time before reaction forces can be summoned to assist - if not by mobile fleet action then by static defense. Can we conclude by saying the quality of a policing force can vary widely? New colonies setup by military expeditions in dangerous ground will have first-rate equipment. Backwater worlds far from an empire's core or borders, which don't produce much of value, will have all the hand me down... Yet this is not 100% true in the real world - the US National Guard units don't have top of the line equipment that you send off to fight wars (they still use F-16As for instance), but they are still respectable equipment. It's not like they fight with Sherman tanks and 1950s' jet fighters... |
