Clarification: The ships are accurately measured using the in-game measurements, but the distances between them are not -- 1m = 1km. I think it safe to say that strikecraft and their weaponry could be measured in the 1m = 1m range, but perhaps more. |

new inforamation.... if this is the truth no problem with explosion, only spacecraft can be destroyed by explosion= inutile spent time and fatigue in this direction. i thinked that the meters in game are real meters to boldly go where no one has gone before

Quote Cobalt Shiva wrote: Regarding the matter of ships being damaged by nearby explosions - very unlikely. Remember that each 'meter' in the HW2 engine is actually a full kilometer. Even ships with their hulls nearly touching (1 'meter' apart are a full kilometer away! Capital ships, which typically never get closer than a few hundred meters (few hundred kilometers) would almost never be in blast range of each other. This sounds very skeptical and unbelievable. A 1:1000 Scale is a little obscure for working. That would mean that the mother ship would travel at roiughly 50000 ( if 50 stands for 50m/s. I'm assuming the speed of a ship is in Metres per second which would sync with the distancing system of the game.) So if that scale holds true... BCs would be about.... 250000 Metres long (250Km) and probes travel at 600000m/s (about half the speed of light I think). Wow. That scale sucks. I'm sticking to a 1m:1m scale in HW:2. -Fear the Might of the Imperial Cortharian Fleet

That said, a probe travels at about 600 kilometeres per second. Which is relatively slow as compared to 2061: A Space Odyssey tech - up to 1000 km/s, but as a strategic speed.

Speed isn't an issue. Acceleration, and the survival of squishy (aka human) passengers, is ![]() |

It would be like working in the womb.

That's odd - I've noticed that the Blade Mk 22 has a rather high initial impulse velocity (or whatever it's called) but is then outstripped by the speed on the Hawks. Interesting.

Interesting. Heh, technically I think that could make it faster (in terms of real space acceloration) But this digresses...... um...... :topic: ON topic however, I think a random chance a Cap-ship should have a low % chance of exploding and doing some damage. If memory serves me right, scuttling the Mothership could cause huge damage to ships around, or was that scuttling any ship and damaged based on size of the vessile? -Fear the Might of the Imperial Cortharian Fleet

for the g accelleration: i read that for example liirha have inertial dampening field. remain the problem of the dimension, i think that the best scale must be 1:1. p.s.: the speed is not relevant comparised with other film, there is hyperspace here and in i think (don't see the film) that in space odissey there are only conventional drive to boldly go where no one has gone before

I like the idea of "smoking hulks drifting off the battle" idea... but I would like to be able to salvage them! If they didn't explode, then they would surely be worth more in resource terms. However, the "still firing while dying" also adds a challenge: that is to get the hell away from that "dead" Al-Khalid since it is still tearing holes in my lines! For me, this means that the battlefield is quite mobile, what with moving my fleet away from stationary, "dying" targets. |

Inertial dampeners are what protect things inside the ship from the destructive effects of acceleration. But they can only handle so much. |

yes, i also think that all crew have a bag for vomit when the liirha start to fly around an al khaiid in battle ead:

Ships have inertial dampeners and artificial gravity (they're one and the same, I'm pretty sure.) The HW engine accurately measures ship lengths, but in distances BETWEEN ships 1 meter = 1 kilometer 'real,' as explained above. This is CANON and the science is right. Thus proximity kills are highly unlikely except at very close range. The Hood exploding didn't take out the Bismarck, and they were far closer together than any HWverse capital ships usually get. Everyone clear? Thread's purpose fulfilled? "This is tactical control..."

i said that the problem of proximity is not for heavy capital ship but for fighter, corvette and some type of frigate that go very near to the ship, howewer the arbiter i remember that go very very near to a ship when attack if compared with super heavy capital ship. lost all fighter in an explosion maybe a great loss and don't forget that ever the arbiters when attack stay very close each other, an explosion in that case may have the consequences of destroy all weapon and subsystem. only chance hyperspace and repair by collectors. i think that the best is 50% possibilty of explosion when a ship go to zero after the time when it continue to fire ![]()

Even close-attack fighters won't get closer than a few meters to the hull. Besides, what would a blast do? There's no pressure wave, debris can be handled by LDS/HDS and hull armor, and the heat effect is minimal. The only risk would be flying right through a fusion fireball.

Well I would assume at least radiation and the EMP of the explosion would do something to the craft. I know that they are shielded against high levels of radiation and EMP bursts and whatnot, but nobody is going to be able to make cheap units that can withstand being in or next to these explosions, the shielding requirements would just be too great. |

I will repeat this once more. There is no "EMP" resulting from nuclear (fusion/fission) reactions in space. And let's say there was -- military systems are hardened against such attacks, if they are even still susceptible to them! Optical and quantum computing would not be affected. That pet peeve done with... Plasma is dangerous, sure. But you would need to tightly focus it to do any damage as space is very, very cold and almost zero pressure. So the particles would get sucked in every direction, resulting in almost immediate dispersal. It would be about as dangerous as a highly energized nebula, which does nothing to 3g and beyond radiation shielding mechanisms. If you want a focused plasma beam, ask the Vagyr. They use them, but they have horrible range. Edited by Glacialis on 11-11-2005 14:58 |
