I like the trading card format and the idea of a PDF. I can also see the benefit of keeping the same information on a website. You could have a members only ship\fleet registry, kinda adding to the roleplay aspect. I've got an old copy of Janes World Aircraft (circa 1989) in front of me. The format they've gone for states the following info... 1) Name 2) Other aircraft that this aircraft could be confused with 3) Powerplant\Engines 4) Wingspan 5) Length 6) Blueprint view from top, front and side 7) Peaceful shot in air 8) Descriptive paragraph (history, role etc..) The trading card reference can be improved by adding a second historical background and if necessary, tactical notes to the back of each card to reap the benefits of double sided printing. Agreed that a website can have the same information. |

Trading cards also provide a great way of designing strike groups and their formations. |

The trading card could work better in those times you can't access the internet.

Hmm, plus it allows for the possibility of cardplay without the game, although I'll be curious on how that is actually done without a measure of a ship's statistical performance. I would like feedback on the printability of the NGCS trading cards so far, and there is a two day window to make any suggestions on them. The poll is very balanced at the moment. Suffice to say each of the methods presented there have their individual pros and cons both to the user and developer. |

Manual format would give more scope for roleplay and PDSverse fluff. Depending on how much scope there is for player defined taskforce elements in NGCS, I would go for trading cards for reasons stated in my previous post. Quote Hmm, plus it allows for the possibility of cardplay without the game, although I'll be curious on how that is actually done without a measure of a ship's statistical performance. If we could decide upon metrics with which to measure a ship's peformance we could. Each ship has a number next to a red crosshair and a number next to a shield which is visible from the center console when a ship is selected. How are they generated? Could we use these? The number next to the crosshair is a projected damage per second, while the number next to the shield is the total health points to a ship. Problem is, the DPS is averaged - a heavy missile ship could havve high DPS but low fire rate, and the armor of the enemy does not influence the DPS. On the other hand, range is a problem as well - DPS is only maximum when all your weapons are within range, and when all your weapons are targeted. A starlight sharpshot magical girl!

:smash: If anyone is interested in moving the metrics discussion on, I suggest we start a new thread. Perhaps a ship's effectiveness at certain ranges -- very long, long, medium, short, CIWS grid -- would be better than a simple DPS rating. If certain weapon systems operate most favorably at medium and long range, add in that "effectiveness rating" to the medium/long totals? |

I've started a new thread to discuss ship performance metrics in the 'General Discussions' forum. We should keep the topics of metrics and manual format separate. Glacialis - valid suggestion, and would lead to better recognition of a ship's performance by not reflecting it in numerical statistics... which is of totally no value in a RP context. |
