Military - Who would you like to be ??
Old Crusty Commodore
Well seeing my career background, id advise anyone to have a basic military forming with an infantry unit(it builds charakter).
Marine infantry like we know it in the netherlands ar either Para , SF or mountainleader qualified. it is for the tough of mind(mind over matter can force the human body to scary xtremes).

Army aircav(airmobile luchtmobiel)
kind of the same as mech infantry used in difrent role more or less the same type of soldiers diffrently doctrined.
use Chinook helicopters as dropship 1platoon a piece.
airforce owns chinooks and the apache`s as cover to form tactische helicopter groep(tactical helicopter group)

Army mech infantry. quite the general trooper passes same marksmanship tests as entire armed force.
For the more genral public who cant forece there mind to xtremes yet.
use YPR infantry fighting vehicle(carrys 8 passengers 1 25mm gunner and a pilot).

army commandos KCT
almost none where civilians when they started there commando training. quite a harsh mindfuck training and grueling physical exercises. you have to be in it to know more about it i wasnt.

So after recieving my infantry training and serving for 4 years wiht it climbing from conscript private to prof sargeant.
After this i could enter the naval academy so i did.
i graduated almost cum laude.
afterwcih i have had many many years on boats starting as officer of the watch and later recieving promotion after 4 year to the rank of commander(huge promotion when you look a it......).
afer another 5 years i had what i always dreamed of my own tub she want a big one.....but it did just fine for meGrin
after commanding several vessels my pride and glory the karel doorman. and once the Rotterdam on a taskgroup command exercise wich got me to my final rank of commodore.
i hated this job really i was more fixed on the captain crew relation and thats were my passion was so i decided i did my fair share of time Grin and took my retirement.

the bottom line is infantry=army above al things in our amred force is that a sailor would be an effective(very basic) soldier asswel.

I'd enjoy driving around in a tank. Tanks are fun and put fear into people. You see a tank and you usually think 'Oh crap, what did I do to bring this down on me.'

One place NOT to be, 'Light Infantry'. There is the same gear as a regular or mechanized Infantry unit, but almost no vehicles to move it. Practically everything move on a soldiers back. I am a USN certified Storekeeper, who joined the California Army Reserves National Guard. I was originally assigned to Headquarter Comapny , 2nd Battalion, 185th Armor Brigade, 40th Infantry Div (Mechanized) as a 'Unit Supply Specialist'. My last deployment had some differences. Instead of HHC, I was in S-4. The unit was 1st battalion of 184th Light Infantry (Air Assualt), but the 'powers that be' decided that we should use ground vehicles only (mainly unarmored Humvees, dueces, etc) while in Irag. Apparently there was a shortage of amored versions. And to make it better, they made me an 11C (Indirect Fire Infantry) and told me I had 2 months to get up to speed on my new job. The unit did not have time to send people off to get formal training. So it would be all 'on the job' training, while getting the unit ready to deploy.

The best group for combat units would be Cav. They are not supposed to engage in large engagments. They are the eyes and ears for the Taskforce Commander. They locate the enemy, herrass his supply and communication lines, take out isolated enemy units and then move on. They can however kick serious tail when needed, but not for an extended engagement. If I had to remain an 11C, I would transfer to a CAV unit. Probally the 18th at San Diego.

The Abrahms tank is great, if you're the driver. The driver is the only one with a 'comfortable' place to sleep inside the tank. The other three have to basically get out of the turret to get any real sleep. The driver also doesnt have to basically be one of three standing in a hot stuffy (and noisy) closet. He has his own space that he shares with no one. The big drawback to tanks is if they ever break (example: throw a track) ...

But for comfort, join the Air Force. They take great care of their people. AC, all the comforts of home, clean uniforms, and except for some specialized jobs (mechanics, spec ops, pilots / flight crews, etc) they are all REMFs.

If you think that you are in a 'no win' scenario, it just means that you haven't been creative enough yet.

If you can't beat a problem directly, try flanking it.

Any problem can be solved with the proper application of

SAS for me. If I had the physical and psychological mettle for it. Toughest training program in the WORLD ya. Nothing like a weekend running around the Welsh countryside with just a compass and a 42lb kit to toughen you up.

I'm currently in a artillery recon unit (basically a dedicated recon drone unit), would like to be in a regular infantry/ranger unit, considering that my position in the unit has me walking on foot most of the time anyway. If I have to fight as an infantry soldier, I'd like to get the fancy equipment our infantry units get instead of my second-line gear Wink
