Capturing ships??
TelQuessir
What you think is none of your concern.

What my concern is is whether I end up with a community of wargamers and roleplayers, or a bunch of useless anarchists that will not get PDS anywhere. Period.

So far, I have achieved the former, which is well, good, and it also means to you: either follow, or go your own merry, silent way.

Shock Wow... just Wow!!! I don't know what else to say. Other then.. Wow!!!
Those who live the longest will know the most.

Well, if the captured carrier can't build anything, I've just thought of another use for it. How about if the enemy AI still thinks it's theirs, until it does something hostile? You could, say, send it next to their shipyard and then suddenly launch lots of corvettes and open fire on it. Imagine the tactical possibilities...Wink

Oh, and sorry if this would be impossible to do, as I know nothing about programming.Cool

Ok, I want to try to steer this thread back into a positive direction. So, since we are here to discuss the process of successfully engaging enemy forces, how do can we best use the marine frigate, which IMHO, is pretty useless now.

Earlier in this thread Tel stated:

That demolitions thing is a valid suggestion. There are many ways to accomplish that, from having the ship armed with some serious short range assault firepower to deploying a large explosive charge on a target on player's key command.

I believe I have experimented with the infiltrator frigate deploying bombs instead of drop pods, but that was inconclusive.

Is there any chance of any of this being worked on in the next upgrade of PDS? In perticular the Idea of the infiltrator(marine) frigate deploying bombs sounds like a good plan if it can be done.

So, what does everyone think??

TelQuessir
Yes, that is being experimented on. Although for now there is a very capable "demolitions" platform called the Cazador weapons system. There is also a larger one called the Iskandar Shah.

That's sarcasm - innate demo capability for the FA will be nice. This is same goes for the Vagyr Infiltrator frigate.

I love capturing enemy assets.

That being said, when an enemy fleet is distracted and allows me to assume control of a capital ship, I have just added a significant resource to my fleet. That's a destroyer/carrier/cruiser that I no longer need to build - if I choose to scuttle/recycle it later, then fine (to have a carrier able to build ships, for instance) - but during a battle, it is awesome to swoop in and cherry-pick an asset.

This, of course, is while your other "demolitions platforms" are targetting higher-priority threats, or simply suppressing the target of infiltration.

As a Hiigaran (sp?), I *love* capturing a Nancy Ajram or a Sorceress. They are cruisers with great firepower and anti-fighter PDS systems, which can also fill in for strikecraft-repair roles and Resource Operations missions (taking the place of a Refinery).

So.... my vote for "what to do with Marine/Infiltrator Frigs" is still with my earlier post: Primary role: Hostile Takeover; Secondary role: Demolitions. If you're going to change the name, then maybe Special Operations Frigate (Nighthawk/Manta/etc)? Give it limited stealth? Just spit-balling, here...

One other thing (not quite on topic but still belongs in here). WHY do captured ships magicly change color if and when you capture them. Please press the issue...

Sun Tzu
I think the change in color is a HW2 feature associated to capture or "switchowner" functions, nothing to do with the PDS scripts.
Anyway I don't see anything magical about it: paint cans and brushes are already beginning to look backdated Wink

I imagine "smart" paint, as I first encountered in David Weber's Honorverse, is responsible. A fairly mundane use of nanotech, but a "safe" one. Quite easy to reflect different wavelengths of light at that level of technology.

Ironwatsas
Yes, but I don't think PDS has "inteligent", light refracting nanopaint or anything along those lines short of cloaking devices or mimic fields.

Also it would make more sense to keep the ships colors the same to confuse the enemy and throw them into chaos. Just imagine if you were flying around in a recource collector and suddenly the Al'Khalid you just saw go the other way comes and blows up your refinery and collector buddies and just goes on a rampage. but if all of a sudden it turns blue and has 225LCD or whatever painted on the side, you'd be pretty suspicious wouldent you?

Glacialis
Keeping colors the same -- that's why there are IFF beacons. Are you saying that neither the former crew or the computer would be able to get off a signal indicating that the ship is compromised?

As for "intelligent" nanopaint, why not? By use of the word nano, I am implying that it will require mastery of molecular and atomic manipulation. Easily done, and this is a trivial use.

Inert
"Cloaking" should not be taken as disappearing visually. It is pretty hard to detect ships on a frigate by looking out a window, which is why electronic detection should be a major factor in deteching ships.

So you should probably swerve away from nanopaint and more on heat reducing techniques in terms of cloaking. Like running dark.

Glacialis
I was talking about changing the colors and fleet number "decals".

Inert
*is slightly embarrassed that he did not read the previous posts*

But either way... I think that the "color" on a ship is electronic visualization and not actual paint. I mean that's like talking about painting every US carrier.

TelQuessir
Ships' colours will not affect any tactical outcome. Painting an Aegis ship pink will not affect its performance.

MarieHawke
Then why do you think Eternal has taken only about two direct hits in the entirety of the series? Because it was pink, that's why. XD

Hmm. There should be enough IFF, so that colors wouldn't do anything anyways. I think it's one of the limitations of the HW2 engine, unfortunately.
A starlight sharpshot magical girl!

On that note the permanently assigned ship colours of HW1 did give that feel of immersion in directing a ad-hoc fleet composed of various alien makes.
