V7 - community-developed ship loadouts
TelQuessir
Over the past week I was amazed and indeed humbled by the amazine progress made on both ship modelling and voice acting - but behind the scenes was a wholly undocumented aspect of ship refit proposals.

Many of you by now will have the image that I hate people modifying ships to upgrade them - wrong. If you present your proposal to me in a manner that merits me looking at them from a serious engineering and military requirements perspective, I will gladly implement them if viable, without question.

Thus, let me present the concepts approved for integration into the v7 public release:

- Herald FE Escort Combatant (Thorin + G)

This ship created from de-mothballed defense field frigate hulls is a potent capital ship hunter despite her aging technology - four HVR150 turrets (try it out in the v7 beta ,patched) make her a very capable pursuit ship capable of finishing off damaged cruisers and punching large holes in frigates.

- Marquess B CVE (Thorin, D. Hawking, Enkidu)

Due to military requirements, the Marquess light carrier was developed into the assault carrier we know today - a highly maneuverable offensive fighter base that the HGN lacks.

Now, downrated Marquess hulls take their place as low-cost, second rate escort carriers that also function as highly capable mobile repair facilities - a modern support frigate concept that is a jack of all trades.

- SRAM Short Range Attack Missile (D. Hawking)

You know the Saracen attack bomber that fires old model capital missiles from external racks? We are making real SRAMs - short range, nuclear tipped, fighter launched attack munitions.

Fighters indentified for SRAM carriage are the LSF and Thunderbolt I, along with the gunship corvette.

- Lithium-ion cannon on Vagyr corvette flotilla leaders (Vala)

The Shamshir is indeed a joint VGR-Taii development, and the centreline PC500 can be replaced with a direct reactor feed IC225 - the QJE's secondary beam weapon. It is harder to use than the PC500 (which will remain on standard corvettes as reliable capital assault weapons) but once locked on...

- HVR150 armaments on Hiigaran fleet carriers (G)

[G] and I were talking about escort/support frigates and the effectiveness of turreted mount hypervelocity rockets (in v7 beta) came up (refer to Herald FE) - it was a logical solution in decreasing the Imperator CVF's vulnerability against direct enemy attack.

In addition to improved defensive capability in v7, the Imperator CVF is now fully deserving of a warship classification although our actual cruiser-carrier design is still stuck in the modelling process.

SRAMs have been successfully test fired by Thorin, who additionally proposes that SRAMs be carried on attack frigates.

In addition to this, Mr.Who proposes that Kaghan cruiser/carriers be converted to missile Q-ships, an effort which is already deployed by Cobalt Shiva and myself in the IVF roleplaying effort.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the correct thread to propose any modifications or additions to our present order of battle, and note that essay writing is not necessary in the presentation of concepts. Unless you seek my guidance in background writing beforehand I am not interested in seeing any sort of essay writing on the PDS battlespace.

That's because the percentage of backgrounding essays, or "fluff", approved for general integration into the PDS battlespace and documentation system is and has been appalingly low over the past year.

I don't have the slightest clue if this has been attempted or discussed (pry has), but I was pondering the idea of an anti-strikecraft configuration destroyer much like the original Homeworld missile destroyer.

Again, the primary armament would be missiles (I would guess the new HVM 150s) with the secondary arms being an extensive array of PDS autocannons and light pulsars.

It could be used to tame clouds of strikecraft and to curb the effectiveness of enemy missile barrages.

Both races could have a version of this design, it being just a modified destroyer chassis.

Anyway, enough of my blabbering. Just a thought.

Noted and already implemented - both Vagyr assault cruisers (DW to CA upclass) have extensive 50mm AC armament, and the Hiigarans have their Arbiter IV CGE which is due for even more extensive upgunning.

Additionally:

Daniel Hawking:

We could make it similar to one of the SBMHAWK missile units from Shiva Option. Massive damage, and no Vaygr scum expects to be disinfected so easily by such a small ship. These would become... quite annoying.

SRAM launchers outfitted outboard would benefit the guided weapons role of this craft - it already has a coupe of HVT launchers. Why not these more powerful weapons?

We would have to rid it of its current PIC (gah typed CIA) loadout, however... which is a reasonable trade. Thou hast not seen the SRAM in akshaun. (<--?!?!?)

Thorin:

I propose we...gut the auxiliary power plants required for all its DEW weapons. But in a 1200mm shell bay...use those lovely barrels on its spinal mount...and we have a SHARG MSA. Each barrel could hold 3 shells at a time. You only need one salvo of 9 to do the job, anyway. 4x ICA180, 8x ICA100. How's that?

Ha. The first real "destroyer" type vessel for the Hiigarans. Now, boys and girls, that's the right way to think Pfft

Project designated Cazador class.

Sexy.
"Man, have pity on man."

Thorin
Pronounced "Cassador" with a sharp s.

MarieHawke
Which is technically impossible - S are round, dammit

And, at least it's not the... ooh another ship name.
A starlight sharpshot magical girl!

Homdax
Cazador is literally "Hunter" thus suggesting high stealth, speed and maneuverability?

TelQuessir
Yes, speculate. I'll let the tension (indicates curiousity) build before spilling the beans.

No tension = no beans Pfft

I planned to disable production(rename production module to "Missile Factory" or something like that) and hangar.
Put 2x2 HVT in botom hangar
6x10 HVR 300mm in side (linked to missile factory)
maybe 2x2 230mm HVR
Reduced Armor and CWIS (but adding 2xMRAM2)
Better cruise speed.

Green- HVR 230
Yellow- HVR 300
Purple- HVT

This concept however, is not viable for independent development

Sounds clear to me. I just wanna make sure that we share the same vision of Missile Cruiser

One of the things that I mis after deflection to Armada is a Blade 22.
Current situation is like that:
Light fighter, gap , bomber, heavy stuff.

Would it be possible to use lower tech, less armed version of HAC II B
as a medium superiority fighter/inteceptor ??

Thorin
I would think that the HAC IIB is that medium space superiority fighter, and the HAC IIA is the heavy Space Superiority fighter.

Likewise, it is, for the Hiigarans:
Blade, LSF, Thunderbolt, HSF.
Vaygr:
Pioneer, HAC IIB, Saracen/HAC IIC, HAC IIA

Jas86
For the sake of argument: I disagree that the Vaygr need a medium fighter, just for the sake that Vaygy fighter tactics focus on the "swarm" method. A mass of cheap, light fighters keep the enemy busy while a few heavy fighters follow in and destroy the occupied enemy.

I'd throw in my two cents and say that the unit caps on the Vaygr LACs ought to be raised and their costs cheapened to make this doctrine more effective, rather than throw in a medium fighter.

Plus, the fluff supports this. Wink

mrWHO
It's not about - "Vaygr have to use swarm tactic". It's about roleplay.
If field comanders says that they need some new toy, you'd better give it to them.
Think about Hitler, he delayed Medium/heavy tank research until multiple comanders comply about T-34 handlings- too bad for him, wonderful for me - my country was next at extermination list after Jews - I guess that Germans didn't liked 1000 years of neighbourhood with Poland.

Yeah, but HGN have two caplimits for LSF and HSF while HAC A share the caplimit with HAC B.

EDIT: BTW if we have a tri-barrel arbiter then it would be an obvious Armada move to have tripple flechette/sunfire turret.

You also have to think about it this way: The Vaygr are largely unbound. Their population is largely limited as opposed to the Hiigarans, who can use volunteers from entire world populus for their crew base. The same problem happened with the Bentusi. It didn't end well for them. Smile

Also, a swarm of medium fighters are better than a swarm of light fighters.

Thirdly, I think the later Second (or are we on Third now?) Era CtB ought to be able to combat Avengers. They were originally designed as heavy fighters.

Methuselah
Hiigaran Standoff fighter:

Utilising obsolescent Scout chassis and proof-of-concept TRAM (tactical range attack missiles), the Hiigaran Crossbow standoff fighter was born.
The Crossbow design will either strengthen the jeune ecole faction within Hiigaran Naval Command, and their combat philosophy of maximising engagement ranges. The alternative is that it's failure will set back their plans by years.
The inherent high quality sensors of the Scout chassis coupled with its high speed allow the Crossbow to stalk enemy vessels beyond the abilities of known Vaygr sensor technology. At this extreme range, the TRAM is deployed, and the Crossbows RTB for rearming.
The TRAM is the jeune ecole's hope for the future, and the main armament of the Crossbow. It is a two-stage fire-and-forget missile. The first boost stage accelerates the missile to high velocity until reaching the very edge of hostile interception fire. At this point it begins its second stage. The boost stage is discarded, releasing four smaller attack munitions. These missiles sacrifice range for explosive power, each of them carrying a payload similar to that of an MRAM2 but without the sophisticated target re-acquisition systems.

The Crossbow is the first 'over-the-sensor-horizon' attack weapon designed by the Hiigaran Navy and is such no match for a capable dogfighter. It carries a limited number of TRAMs, performs poorly in a dogfighting situation, and has limited combat surviveability.
However when functioning within its intended role it can break a strikecraft formation with a single volley, allowing dedicated dogfighters to mop up the broken formation. Equally, TRAMs have shown great promise as a saturation weapon, breaking through CIWS to cripple subsystems.

Name: Crossbow
Designation: Fighter, Stand-off
Chassis: Hiigaran Tactical Scout
Tactical Translation Velocity: 450 m/s
Armament: 1x external TRAM launcher, 1x 35mm autocannon
Battle Support Avionics: Extended Capability Sensor Array

Missile frigate:

Can be for Vayger or Hig

Ok first you take a frigate chassis and load it up with as many anti capital ship missile launchers that will POSIBLEY fit.

Now if you have ever played the star wars mod warlords you know that if you press z with fighters you launch all of there missiles and have to re arm.

Now make the frigate so i won't attack and it won't attack on aggressive. So no you have to press z to fire its missiles.

Then would fall back to the battle line where the severely damaged units will be finished by your fresh units.

Now you have your frigates dock to a carrier and rearm.

This introduces tactic and upgrades the need for carrier

revan
That in my opinion would not work. A single purpose frigate is really limiting, especialy since in the above proposal it would not attack by default. A decicated cap ship hunter is exactly what the Lothringen was and as a consequence whenever I encountered one in a skirmish it was easy meat to one or two bomber squads. A capital ship needs to be multi-pupose, hence PDS.

Maybe they won't include it but if you think about it this perfect for vayger who done have much versatility. Also its reliance on missiles is perfect because most vaygers rely on mass missiles to get past the more advanced PDS of the hig. This craft is designed for attack and so are most vayger ships. Added to that this mod is all about micromanagement.

Teufel
What about MRAM and HVM buoys ? One shot rapid deyployment weapons, hard to detect but easy to destroy since they are just a weapon mounted on simple firing platform. Purpose low grade area denial, and slowing down of fleets/ fighter groups.

Also a MRAM frigate, similar to the Cataphract class ships in David Webers In Death Ground. Large amount of anti fighter beam weapons and MRAMs , with improved fire control and if the game allows the ability to link with other firgates to form interlocking fields of fire.
