All right. So I realize that space is a vacuum, and that it is impossible for sound to travel through it. However, I would very much like to be able to play with the sounds provided. I downloaded the PDS 6.1 mod, and installed it to me old HW2 directory. After messin around a bit, I found the -overridebigfile posts on the old forum. Now, regular old homeworld works as it always does when I use the old shortcut, battle chatter, ion cannons, random explosions, and that really cool groaning noise that capital ships make when blowing up. But, for whatever reason, with the -overridebigfile command, sound does not work. Get all the cool new features tho, 'cept of course the new battle chatta stuff. Oh yeah, for whatever reason, I get the new sounds on the stock HW2, fighter's battle chatter, frigate's "Contact fleet command on 121.x" whatever, all pretty cool. I did a search on the old forums, and if this is a re-post, I apologize, and if anyone has any ideas, then shoot 'em my way, I'd love to play this more |

I'm sure this has happen before, but alas I know of no remedy. Is your battle chatter in PDS set to at least normal? Also check if your speech volume is up correctly, although silly as it may sound now. |

Yep, set to normal. My apologies if I did not clarify. When I said no sound, I meant no sound at all, nothin in the startup screens, the menus, the soundtrack, campaign game informations (dispatch fighters to protect the transport immiadetely) nothin. Kinda wierd. Silent homeworld. |

Do you have version 1.1 installed correctly? |

Most definitely, I've even reinstalled once to make sure that wasn't it. Everything in the mod, as far as I can tell, works as advertised 'cept for the sound.

I've seen problems like this but so far we all have no idea as to what is the cause. |

Quote Is there really sound in space? Actually...yes!! What is sound? It is a pressure wave. So long as you have some kind of gaseous medium, you will have the possibility of forming pressure waves in it by 'shocking' it in some way. In space, the interplanetary medium is a very dilute gas at a density of about 10 atoms per cubic centimeter, and the speed of sound in this medium is about 300 kilometers/sec. Typical disturbances due to solar storms and 'magneto-sonic turbulence' at the earth's magnetopause have scales of hundreds of kilometers, so the acoustic wavelengths are enormous. Human ears would never hear them, but we can technologically detect these pressure changes and play them back for our ears to hear by electronically compressing them. From Ask the Space Scientist at www.spacehab.com/sk/frplay.htm All answers are provided by Dr. Sten Odenwald Also, I've read that you would hear the explosion of a large ship in space because of the atmosphere escaping the ship during the explosion. It wouldn't be as loud as you would experience on a planet with an atmosphere, but there you have it. I know that this isn't really what this thread was about. But I just thought I'd put this out there. |

Said atmosphere would dissipate very rapidly and the "sound" won't transmit through a spacesuit or spacecraft. On another side note I have turned down the sound fx volume drastically in v7 as the new battlechatter system is much more entertaining to listen to than the usual weapons fire. |

Don't even got battle chatter or music, or any such. Used to work, before some virus nerfed my computer. Reinstalled everything, and all of a sudden, no sound. Hopefully it'll change with 7.0.
Well, people normally put something creative here. Hrm.

Quote battlechatter system is much more entertaining to listen to Entertaining? Is that what they're calling it? Maybe it's just a "me" thing, but all those damned voices really irritate the hell out of me in the middle of a battle. Especially when it gets to such a point that I can pause the game and they still keep going for, like, a minute afterward. And, for NO reason, I can't turn the battle chatter to anything except "full" it seems. Switching to low or even off has no effect whatsoever. That a bug? |

That is a bit extreme, notadeadhorse. The pds chatter is much better than the vanilla HW2. But it is true that there is too much repetition in certain situations (eg in pieplate view, the "no problem" chatter is looping; same with "enemy contact" when you waypoint your fleet through enemy position). I don't know if this is pds related or a flaw in the HW2 vanilla soundscript. |

I have not modified any of the sensors manager sound so the same flaws from stock HW2 remain. As for "entertainment", show me how you can keep quiet after I shove you in a corner and point a gun at you. Without reason. ![]() If you want more diversity in the clips, do your own voiceacting and submit them. If you want changes you will do well to show others how it is done. I do not need a forum with lots of ideas but no motion. Edited by TelQuessir on 07-11-2005 23:04 |

The problem of looping voices is in the chatter.lua and can be fixed (see the sister thread in Tech support section of this forum). |

Leftenant ![]() ROFL - I haven't heard that "Penguin" one ever. XD And finally - I personally prefer the battle chatter, like Tel thinks, it makes the battlespace oh-so-interesting to hear the diversity in the culture. Tel's politically correct

The problem is when it's looping over and over again...something Sun Tzu has just fixed. Bravo! |

Leftenant? Some sort of second in command?lol.I want "Al-Khalid II spotted!FALL BACK!FALL BACK NOW!" can battle chatter be triggered by an event, such as contact with an Al-Khalid? Edit: yes, the function already exists for enemy probes; duplicating it for the al-khalid doesn't look too hard.

That's an excellent suggestion. I'm no code-monkey, but it sounds like it's possible and it would GREATLY enhance the urgency and immersion factor of the battle chatter. Can anyone take that project on? "This is tactical control..."

I'll try and code a few warnings when nemesis like the Al-Khalid show up; making voices is a pain for mac-users like me as we have to code the recordings on a pc (heaven when some of the relic tools work). Edit: I realised scripting such warnings is outrageously simple; the only real work/fun will be in voice acting. Edited by Sun Tzu on 10-11-2005 22:39 |
