Currently implemented in the Chat is http://www.phpfreechat.net/ which seem to have an active development, which I deem very important because it means there are people there to answer your questions. I will redo a couple of things: - smaller font - other font Your suggestions? I am willing to examine other solutions for chat, but, they must meet above condition of having an active development. And of course, work on this server, with basic CGI/PHP/PERL config. king-o'da'bigfile

What I might like to have is access control - only for registered users of the site. This is to prevent further issues of industrial sabotage. |

Why don't we just use IRC? It usually works well and has all kinds of admin options. |

Bah I had it here already and moved it across to the admin :/ anyway .. 1): CGI:PHP is a bad BAD Idea. Use your own server/client. 2): Timeouts are a pain in this Version, 30 second and you are dropped by the CGIHP server 3): When you timeout you don't know that you have been timed out at all so it appears to you that everything is fine and that you haven't disconnected 4): Noticed that when a user has been dropped and he comes back you can't see his name on the right. This part may not be a major fact but you can't edit the colours from White BG to a black BG/white font oh yeah, if you want to moderate use bots/eggdrops the conf is pretty long [url]http://www.egghelp.org/ [/url] here is a list for a few different IRCd http://ircd-hybrid.com/ [url]http://www.unrealircd.com/ [/url] and if you want to setup like the last one, Unreal, try this http://www.anope.org/ and the following for getting on to it www.mirc.co.uk and this for making it even better http://www.nnscript.de/ *EDIT* Damit, well fixed now Edited by DevilKhan on 14-09-2007 11:44 |

Considering this site is run on a web hosting hotel please clarify point 1. 2. Settings 3. More Settings 4. Even More settings (related to timeout i would presume) input welcome... 1-2 hours work for a "noob" at most to set things up  . ircd.conf is one long pointless piece of crap when you can write 20 lines and half everything work perfectly. I suppose put me down, except I do relise that it is very wrong to be such actually talking here, but running an IRCd is nothing new too me, I've run several in the past before this year. link it, if at all possible, to the hwcommunity.com IRC and have services as well which would be good for us  . |

Excuse me. Yes I am a n00b setting up IRC. However I am not that n00b when it comes to php and setting up things that work. You say 1-2 hours to setup. well, that would be for you, disregarding input from others and taking the time to customize it so it fits, no more and no less, the needs for this community. I take it little by little, making sure we have test periods in between, and unless you take a slightly more serious approach to this and refrain form such comments you have made so far, and make a decent effort to put your alledged experience to some good work, I really do not have the time to argue about this and may just leave you out. I am not arguing with anybody, sorry if you have misunderstood me. I am not trying to start any fights, jeeze. too clarify in two parts CGI:PHP and IRCd system (short and sweet). Firstly, CGI:PHP is part of the HTML web engine. This system is not something I would ever use primarily, unless every other reason stopped from using a background process or bg proc, and left me only two options CGI:PHP or just use a channel on someone else's server. Secondly, server/client as I stated were an IRCd server, which has different variants some which do have the versatilely as stated past post. 30-60 minutes to setup and have it running if you know how 2-3 hours if you don't. but once you do have it up you can change the configuration and setup different parts: chanserv, nickserv,memoserv etc, even with services you can get oper bots to looking after registered channels and flood protection in the channel too if you want. As well as some selected +r(registered) meaning the have to be registered with the server at the on time. Every IRCd I'd setup,I would run for at least a month on "testing" mode, but I don't know what others do. I ran alot off scripts bots, admins, channels and so on constantly changed, adding or removing but the whole time the stable server stayed up. Clients: depends what the user(s) have and want there are many mIRC(windows), xircon, trillian, BitchX, irrsis(l*nix. You can have many varietys of changing every thing not just the font on the client-side which means they can have as much as the want or as little. Again, I am sorry about my "attitude" if it comes across as argumentative I am truly sorry. I hope thing was what you meant? |

Verry nice... Ok, so what do I need firstly serverwise? (As you might understand I can not, without trouble, let you in on the FTP)... I am all yours, you seem to know your stuff and Tel wants control, so tell me what I need and then we can do configuring and stuff via the primary setup. Mind You, I do not own the server and I can not access conf files or anything like that to do changes. It is a PHP/CGI/MySQL/SSI/Ruby/mod_Perl/WebDav/SSH server. king-o'da'bigfile

That is fine just make sure you can keep bg proc on it? it's becoming more and more as we move in to the era. The supply webhosts and not background procs at all. Elukka I am really not sure. Tel'Quessir gave me a go ahead and I went from there. Actually I prefer having one on hwaccess cause then it is much easier to administer since we are in control, not having to bug Nova or Dyn or Soul. Besides, I am not much on hwcommunity anyways and this little project would get me in to that little world that is IRC and its tech, a matter I haven't dealed with before.
