The ship designators will be rewritten completely as the present USN derived system can be misleading as we expand the number of ships available to the player in PDS. With that objective defined, this is the new designator system - intended to be straightforward and instinctive much like battle management in v7.0. Big ships, first. You could note at a glance that a designators with two letters means a new ship built to design specs, and a 3 or 4 letter designation implies one that has her role modified through refit, modernisation or modification efforts during the course of the ship's service life. Thus for example a BB might be refitted to a BBVG (battleship, carrier, guided missile primary armament) a couple decades after her maiden launch in order to keep pace with military developments. Capital Ships BB - battleship. Baseline classes conforming to the designation's definition will have the class letter repeated, like for USN ships in RL. BBC - Command battleship. Refitted from existing battleship. BC - Command battleship, built as large command ship from keel-up. BBG - Battleship with guided missile primary armaments. BH - Heavy battleship or "battlestar" and "Supermonitor" classes in the Hiigaran Navy. BL - "Battlecruiser" as in meaning of pocket battleship - WW2 Kriegsmarine pocket BBs. Conforms to "light" as the letter L as in CVL. All flotilla leaders will use the Command designation - C. Battleships with reduced protection for increased agility (traditional battlecruiser) are also included in the BL classification. BBV - battleship refitted sometime in its BB lifetime to carry strike craft - reference, IJN Ise class battleship/carrier. It wasn't a very worthwhile refit in RL. BR - Survey battleship. BBX - Experimental battleship. BV - battle carrier. Capital ship built to serve both BB and CV roles without compromises. Note difference to BBV, this is a battleship/carrier constructed from scratch, not a refit of an existing BB. Has extensive electronics warfare outfit by default design. BVL - light battle carrier. Not as capable (economical deployment) or small battle carrier. BVR - Scout battle carrier. CV - Carrier, cruiser sized (hence CV). Baseline, no-nonsense carrier of strikecraft. CVA - Carrier intended for offensive deployment - "attack carrier". Also called "strike carrier" and replaces CVK designator. Emphasis on firepower and maneuverability. CVB - Cruiser-sized carrier refitted as a second-line battleship during its lifetime, example is a Kaghan CVF with a Sorceress BV's armour fit. Wheras the BV is in the end more capable as it is built keel-up to the BV's capability. "B" ships focus on both firepower and survivability at the expense of maneuverability. CVC - Command Carrier. Extended electronics and communications outfit. Taskforce flagship. CVF - Fleet carrier. "Fleet" ships are intended for very long term deployments, capable of operating independently in trans-galactic voyages as part of a military force disposition. Increased internal capacity, enhanced damage control, support for miner craft etc. CVG - Guided missile carrier - like the Russian Kuznetsov with her long range SS-N-19 ASMs. Contrasted with CVA and CVBs which have primary firepower consisting of autocannon, DEW and/or plasma weaponry. CVH - Large or "super" carrier. CVL - light carrier. Small, less capable carrier. Usually used for second-line and convoy escort duties where a CV's capability is unnecessary, and the cost of deployment prohibitive for second-line duties. Low cost and intended for mass production. CVR - Scout carrier. CA - Attack/assault cruiser. Cruiser design emphasising on firepower and maneuverability for offensive operations. CB - "battlecruiser" in the form of a cruiser up-armoured to battleship standards, but has no BB class primary armaments - reference, WW2 USN Alaska class heavy cruisers. CBR - Scout battlecruiser. CC - Command cruiser. CE - Escort cruiser. Intended for defensive deployments. CF - Fleet cruiser. Galactic range/endurance, requires less logistics support than a normal cruiser. CG - Guided missile cruiser. Expendable (ie, missiles) primary armaments. CGE - Guided missile escort cruiser. Defensive role. CH - Heavy cruiser. CL - Light cruiser. CV - Dedicated carrier, as above. CR - Scout cruiser. Frigates FF - "Fleet Frigate" - baseline 130-250m class vessel. FA - "Assault/Attack" Frigate - focus on firepower and maneuverability. FB - "Battle" Frigate - heavily armoured and armed at the expense of agility. FC - Command frigate. Flotilla leader. FE - Escort Frigate. Attendant or defensive role. FG - Guided missile frigate. FH - Heavy frigate - increased tonnage or size from usual 130-250m frigates but no specialised focus for outfit (contrast with FB and FA). FV - Very small carrier, frigate sized. FR - Scout frigate Corvettes Ct - baseline class. There are no more "sloops" - they will be considered corvettes due to size. CtA - attack/assault corvette CtB - battle corvette CtC - corvette flotilla leader CtE - escort corvette CtG - missile corvette CtH - Heavy or large corvette CtL - Light corvette CtR - Scout corvette Fighters FtA - Attack/Assault fighter - combines former FTA, FTB, FTK designations. FtC - Command fighter, wingleader's mount FtE - Escort fighter or point defense interceptor FtG - Missile-armed fighter FtH - Heavy fighter FtR - Scout fighter Fleet Auxiliaries AB - Very old de-mothballed battleship, "auxiliary battleship" used only as a bombardment or fire support platform. ABV - Auxiliary battle carrier. AC - Auxiliary command ship. AE - Auxiliary escort. Can be any "armed merchant cruiser" type ship. AEC - Auxiliary escort command ship - ie, flagship of a large interstellar convoy. AG - Auxiliary guided missile vessel. AV - Auxiliary carrier. AVE - Auxiliary escort carrier. |

So which would the BL be equivalent to more? The Scharnhorst Battlecruiser or the Desutchland Panzerschiffe? ...hmm. Cruiser hull with battleship armaments. Interesting. |

ROFL. What would that be - Battleship, Special? Like, say, a PoH equipped with the Fabled Positron Blast Cannon? |

That would be a Strike Battleship. However, that designation is used as an intelligence misdirection for obvious reasons ![]() |

not so sure command corvette would be suited as flotilla leader think might rather direct it to Strike craft Wing leader ship. special attached corvette for this reason. like the generals jeep or something |

For the nerw pilots: corvettes are the bigger ships. Thats all, good hunting." |

LOL BS. Btw, note that there is no more "strike" or "hunter-killer" designation - this has all been bunched up in the "attack/assault" one since they mean the same, offensive oriented role. |

The Destroyer class will be reactivated. DDs are defined as relatively small vessels (barely larger than frigates) intended for offensive deployment, armed to tackle prey larger than themselves and maneuverable enough to outrun what they can't outgun. |

This is an ahistorical representation of the Destroyer class - one that is tailored to our requirements in this battlespace. But yes you can reference some of our DDs' design concepts to some facets of historical ship classes, infact, its a hybrid of several such real-world concepts.

Possability of a CHE, for use as an orbital defense cruiser or area defense weapons platform. Based off the Arbiter IV design. Loadout of 4x LH25, 4x RG320, 8x SRAC125, 4x SRAC140, 8x ICA180, 4x ICA100, 4x PIC300, 20x HVM300, 4x HVM120, 2x HVT700 I also thought of the idea of using denser armor, usually restricted for heavier chassis due to reduction in translational velocity, to increase survivability. This improvement in armor grade would also marginally improve systems integrity, by making the hide around the vitals tougher. This would, however, render the ship a ponderous thing compared to its close cousin, the Arbiter IV Fleet Cruiser. |
