PDS 7.3.1 Vaygr Defense -video
Elukka
I've spent quite a lot of time making a video of PDS. (I've wanted to do this for some time now, but i've been lazy. Recently i acquired some proper motivation.)

I wanted it to be a little story, not just a demonstration video. It's about a weakened Vaygr force struggling to fight a Hiigaran fleet during the siege of Hiigara. I mostly used music from the first Homeworld game, because i think it's great and fits the space setting very well.

Now, i would like to upload the video, but i have no idea where i could do that. It's about 10 minutes long so it's fairly big, 81,5mb. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Smile

Ok, here it is:

I'd love to get some comments, as this was the first video i've actually completed. The camerawork isn't the best in some spots, but hey, my fps was like 6 when filming.

Filefront can certainly host it. I don't know about youtube and google size requirements.

Alright, thanks. I'll edit the link into the first post.

Will get to reviewing your work. Thanks for the publicity.

I've watched it. My comments:

1. Cool stuff! It was fun to watch from the first to the last minute.

2. It is more a game play showcase than a demo movie. The images are very clean and you've made a very nice work in removing all ui things. However the camera is most of the time attached to a ship, like when you play, whereas a movie-like video would definitely use fixed and travelling cameras that are not focused on a given ship. You should try those camera effects for your next works.

3. Your movie shows that PDS needs to get faster! We are growing tired of slow ships. We need to see fast maneuvering big ass ships filling the space with fire and rockets!

Thanks for the comments. For number 2, it would be great if HW2 had a filming thingy like some other games, being able to set up cameras and stuff. It's kind of hard to move the camera smoothly around in HW2. Even more so with 5-6 fps. Pfft

Edit: I got a sudden inspiration to do a video about Kiith Tambuur, the one mentioned in the Cata manual. They were bounty hunters who, at the moment, used a single frigate to capture Imperial war criminals, declaring "eternal vengeance" on the Imperial Taiidan. Sounds fun. I might even use some small bits from Cata and HW1, but it will still be mainly PDS.

If you were very keen you could write mission that is just a running video, In a film style. much like the begining of missions.
It might take a very long time though but its possible.

You can customise camera movement paramenters in a "camera.lua" file inside homeworld2.big. Worth a try.

Elukka
I think i'll check the file out. I have no experience whatsoever, but some simple modifications shouldn't be too hard. You can change camera movement speed, right? Because slowing that down would open up all kinds of video making possibilities for me.

Sun Tzu
You should pick up the file in the RDN docs, since they include useful comments. It should be camera.lua in the data/ui/ directory. There are also bits of information in the RDN pdf docs (in the Sensors Managers doc, I think).

Btw if you are interested in making another film I can send you the m03 Operation: Sledgehammer new script with the initial phase (Vaygr assault on shipyard) totally scripted. That way you would have an almost repeatable battle scene, enabling you to shoot it from different cameras.

For the testing of camera switches I made something very simple that allowed you to switch from camera to camera with just a few keys.

As long as you left the Camera names like cam_point1 - 10 you switch between them as you wanted, not even in order. Using the intepolate command which gives you those lovely smooth transitions.

If you really wanted you could make something that focuses on specific ships too. Although i find that very fiddly.

You need to get the right angle before you focus?

That'd be nice. Smile

Mostly Harmless, what you wrote seems very promising, but i, being the newbie i am, don't really understand most of it.

If you want I can make something simple and show you how it works?

Sun Tzu has make a very good initial phase in m03 very worth a look.

Thorin
...That is so totally HW1 music. How did you import it? I miss all that music.

Elukka
Yeah, it is HW music. I don't have it in game, i just extracted it from HW's .big file and added the music to the video.

As for future videos, i'm not really sure i have time to do much right now. I may make some more if i have the time.

Elukka: I must be really tired because I totally missed your last post in this thread. I'll email you the files tonight.

I actually have the original HW soundtrack CD that came with the GoTY edition, Thorin.

Thorin
I thought I had that edition...but maybe I don't. I don't remember a music cd...but they used high quality music to go with the original game, and I just fell in love with it (along with the band that did the ending credits).

Sun Tzu
You mean: "Yes"? That is a rather massive band. I'd love to see a PDS trailer with some Yes soundtrack, like Close To The Edge or Heart Of The Sunrise Smile

Well, yeah...I've heard a few good ones that'd go with them. I'll have to get a list to whichever video editor wants to make some!
