Would like to start to mod
Silent_Assasin
Hey guys a couple of quick questions. Seeing all the mods out there for Homeworld 2, I would like to start modding. Nothing big right now, just trying to start. I was thinking along the lines of a Vaygr civil war before they united under Makaan because i love that race to death Pfft.

But anyways, my questions; firstly, what is the most desirable program to be used for modelling ships? Secondly, (I don't know where else to really ask this cause i'm a complete newb to this IP stuff) may i experiment with the ship models and scripts included in the pds mod (prolly v7.3)? Like I said, I wouldn't be distributing anything.

I have already read through some of the stuff on the relic forums for modding, but i'm still a complete newb, so please bear with me. But I have been playing Homeworld for over six years now so I know what I'm talking about gameplay wise. At least i delude myself that i do. Thanks for any help and if you wish to talk to me more you are more than welcome. I believe I have all my contact info listed in my profile.

Bite me, I'm all for fan mods for PDS. Like the one SunTzu is doing.

Ship modelling is a bit more complicated and unless you're a 3D modeller, don't bother or let others more qualified to the task. It takes a lot of time and effort to model a ship from scratch, then texture and configure it for game use. That time is better spent on scripting using existing resources (that PDS provides).

Ok! Then maybe I can look into a campaign structure, similar to the one started on v7.3. Let me mess around with it, and if i get good enough with it maybe i can help you guys with that campaign Smile.

unfbig is a nice utility. You can take a look at the karos graveyard wiki. They have lots of useful information.

Engine trails - at the end of every ship or missile config file there is a line that says "SetEngineTrails" etc. Change the second zero into a 6 and see what happens.

A more practical approach is to compare the difference of that line between either stock HW2 or V9.0Alpha and 7.2 because it directly tells you what you need to change.

Also note that if you're using PDS resources for your mod then I insist it take the PDS name/concept and that no resources from other mods are used. Making a compilation of various mods may sound nice from the personal perspective but tends to generate excessive complications in the release phase... not to mention every mod compilation to date has been of sub-par quality or represented cases of content ripping without proper requests of resource usage from content creators.

PDS to date represents the widest range of model/scripting resources available in a single package so there's little reason to bother with anything else. So long as there is an acceptable level of interest in upcoming 4E development there will also be an influx of third party content into our base of operations. That IP stuff is a waste of time.

unfbig is a pretty good utility and the karos graveyard wiki is a very nice resource.

Cool thanks for the help on the trails.

PDS 7.3 resources and ships with engine trails is pretty much perfect for me, so i wouldn't bother mixing in other stuff. I'm good with whatever u need me to do about that kind of stuff.

Right now I'm just messing around with mission/scenario scripts. Any idea how to create cutscenes?
