RP storyline
Thorin
As Tel just stated, PDS: AS will mainly be an extention of story line...so I propose that we decide on some mutually-created storyline (Arrrrr Peeeee).

So...what RP should we start off with?

TelQuessir
Most realistically, start off with 262 Armada destroyer and carrier command.

Then when 7.6 is released you may RP combined fleet operations with the Vagyr OOB, and the occasional Hiigaran capital ship.

Go with what you have access to now in terms of information resources.

I shall also be writing RPs on the scenarios I have created, in particular the commerce raiding one for its downright spectacular tactical cohesion exhibited by our small craft in support of a damaged capital ship.

Once we have the ships for it, I would like to suggest doing a light Hiigaran carrier group. community input is important here, so don't be afraid to post!

TelQuessir
Hmph. Light carriers are simply SDI bait, where one SDI can blow up your puny carrier and shoot down its fighters as they launch. Prove me wrong! Smile

Itharu
If that's the case then why would I bother deploying a carrier in so close. I could see the carrier housing heavy, long range craft that would eliminate my SDI problem with out endangering my carriers.

Perhaps even deploy fighters at a distance of half a million kiliometers from the planet, would render SDI deployments useless.

Thorin
We can argue that in another thread. And, yeah, I do still think light carriers are viable, and will discuss it elsewhere. Please, contribute some useful suggestions to the kinds of RPs we should have here.

TelQuessir
SDIs -are- heavy fighters, optimised for the first-pass strike role. With proper support I can negate your combat space patrols, and blow up your puny carrier.

Moral of the story - a carrier by itself isn't a very good power projection platform. Orbital interceptors are designed to kill these targets from the furthest range possible, in the most efficient way possible.

In that note it is obvious that if you want to argue "why not deploy the carriers half a million kms out" - do note that we already do so there is really, no point arguing.

Thorin - such "arugments" ARE already RP, in that we are assuming ourselves as fleet planners or strategists. Working with me or against me for this long, I would expect you to note that I enjoy the occasional argument or even bloodshed once in a while Smile\

All we need to do for this exchange of words (Notice too that I employ psychological provocation in RP start sequences) is to slap on random alien sounding character names, and it is done.

This of course is strategists' RP. Writing battle AARs from the point of view of the ship captain, a crewmember, or the TF commander, is also RP. In the end you could say that 80% of everything in PDS, and how things are added to it, is RP.

Thorin
Speaking of which...should we do another crew RP, or do an alternative...and do commander slots?

What I mean by that is that we do the senior staff of the command ship, and the captain/group leader of the rest of the ships and/or strike groups.

I'm for the latter , myself. I'm planning to already have the first RP rolling before 7.6 hits.

TelQuessir
Commander slots, for sure. Minimise micromanagement.

Start off with squadron command and play wingman ships yourself using multiple characters. We failed in RP2 in the past because it asked for too much detail.

I, of course, have a very obvious role to play in the 262 Armada...

Thorin
That's just how I like it. So...Armada destroyer group first?

TelQuessir
I given you enough hints already. Do you need some proper motivation.. or rather MORE of it? Smile

Okay, I will need order of battle entry for your destroyer squadron. Ship names, type and short background for the commanding officer.

A destroyer squadron typically consists of 4 to 6 Achaemenes or Bayandor class vessels, along with optional attachment of a corvette squadron (2-6 Spahi PCG) or one second-rate Vikrant missile cruiser that doubles as a replenishment vessel.

I'll write something up. Where the heck is everybody? I want recruits for these RPs, dangit Pfft

Angel of the night
how about a carrier and a few flac frigates and a destroyer?
"hey look free ion cannon particles mum can i have some"
"no dear you will get hurt "
"no i won't mum they are only coming from that ion cannon frigate over there."

TelQuessir
(matriach drow Pfft )

You will first pass the trial of destroyer command. Then only you will even think of mentioning those higher-rank assignments in my presence.

Do you understand?

Thorin
Can't I just maim him? please? *puppy eyes*

Just kidding. If you're willing to RP, that is.

mrWHO
Spahi is now designated as corvette? Did you rewriten ships classification??

Thorin
We need to address that some, yes. I think it's because they are tactically strike craft.

I have an offtopic question:
Right now we have a newtonian physics, real life scale of battle and high automatization of all kind of stuff ... but now I feel more like observer that the commander. Now I don't even need to pick a target for a ship because it pick the best one for itself.

I know, I know, I hate the god damn micromanagemet too, but I don't want to play zeromanagement.
How I can use a very important thing that is named 'Tactic', or do I do wrong something?

Could you create a tutorial topic for those who have problems with adapting and are sure as hell they don't want to die (Adapt or die Pfft )

Thorin
Well, I gues PDS: AS is more strategic than tactical. I feel the same way, and I might try to make a more tactical version later.

However, Tel has the point that the controls that the player has would provide less effective and successful control than the flightpaths and attack scripts. I think an interesting twist with tactics would be to translate them into attack scripts and see how that goes.

TelQuessir
It depends on the ship. My latest creation the "Nightmare Mistress" CA450 (export-version Taiidani battleship, you know what it is) is just as effective in tactical computer and manual piloting.

The default attack pattern is a defensive one for lone engagements (staying at main gun range and out of effective ballistic and missile fire) while if you want to go full offensive and damn the enemy torpedoes just fly her yourself.

In terms of RP this big boat has a first rate direct neural command system and few in the frontier militaries are trained to use these, if they even could handle such systems without risk of mental injury.

So those who can operate in the CIC of such a super capital ship probably are as good as, or better than their vessels' tactical computers in three dimensional combat maneuvering.

Newtonian physics combat in the AS universe, remember, doesn't have any technological "excuses" such as inertial dampers. Ship crews are genetically modified to be compatible with ship life support systems practically as aquatic beings.

And looking at Vagyr society perhaps only the best of them could do more than be mere slaves to the ship's AI as it fights the vessel constantly accelerating at 50Gs...
