V7.4-8.0 Planning Thread - Hiigaran Ships
TelQuessir
Vagyr shiplist will be completed to resemble a basic order of battle before I proceed with HGN vessels.

Of course there will be Vagyr civil war scenarios mixed into later releases.

I would like to see some ideas and concepts for missile-centric combatants that will be deployed first for their simplicity in employment. Of course the Praetor's background is settled well and good for an arsenal ship of sorts.

The light cruisers, I think.
Like the block 17 and 18.

Also, the Hiigaran battlecruiser. It's high time that it acted as a battlecruiser rather than a battleship.

As for frigates, I would think the Hydra armed with cluster anti-ship pods, as well as the Resolution IIb for missile ships, and Bloodhounds for "melee" dogfighting.

Such dogfighting would be a way for diverting fire.

You -are- aware that drawing fire is fatal most of the time in 7.4? Just look at your casualty rates for PCG operations vs larger ships, without manual control to have them deploy primary missiles only then retire.

Thorin
Most of the time, yes. In such cases where it is required, you are most likely trading off a few 300 crew frigates for 2k crew capital ships.

Think of them as the space equivalent of today's (and yesterday's) destroyers.

Mm, the patcoms will probably be used as specialised missile platforms in an actual war - use speed to advantage in rapidly intercepting a target then maintaining long range until primary missiles run out (thereafter they retire to reload weapons unless in a dire situation to go in close to employ secondaries).

How about an FT class vessel that can function as a dedicated standoff strike fighter or missile dogfighter. The old Acolyte chassis could be refitted with pc40s and modern avionics while using the ACV link thingy to attach a missile rack. This can de simulated with the old LMS system used on the DWG "old graceful". This will allow the Acolyte to change it's ordnance rack to suite it's needs. We can disable all its armments to prevent abusing this in combat.

LSF + ER-ASTM would be a perfect "manned missile bus", I agree. But they will only close to direct-fire weapon range in emergencies or to finish off targets with interceptor missiles and CIWS knocked out.

Any ship with lasers will be devastating against fighters, as per NGCS logic. You could succeed in a war of attrition with hundreds of fighters (too many for a laser battery to handle) but it won't be pretty in terms of casualty levels.

So BSG style dogfights are impossible with post-modern technology actually being simulated to their full capabilities, unlike PDS and its need for dumbing down in a tiny battlespace.

Frigates are deathtraps nowadays. At least fighters have *some* chance. Frigates are too big to do fancy evasive fighter moves and too small to take punishment.

Maybe it's high-time to make frigates purely escort roles, ensuring missle barrages dont saturate the defenses of the big boys then hang back in support of major engagements?

Though maybe the advent of a large area cluster-type explosive missle that could be used as a counter-missle might be just what the doctor ordered.

The problem with all this, though, is that, ideally, an admiral would want to launch ALL his missles at once, and such AI coordinations between ships of the same type is near impossible. It's almost scary to try and orchestrate fighter-launched ordanance and ship based weaponry hitting at the same time.

The Werewolf mission on Day 77 has such fighter-capital strike coordination in place... but I agree on your patcom/frigate/AS universe corvette) observation.

However in the SDI-62A vs BCG131 mission note that the patcoms actually bought a lot of time for the battlecruiser in forcing the attacking fighters to deal with the escorts first or get lasered - thereby ruining their chances of a coordinated missile assault on the BCG.

In the Serpent's Pass mission, likewise the corvettes were excellent missile strike units. They have more staying power than the SDIs and their 2S-ER-ASTM loadout was critical in finishing off the damaged Prince of Hiigara.

The Casualty
My post on this matter seems to have disappeared... Hiccup in the forums perhaps?

I was thinking that frigates should become picket vessels instead of assault ships. They should have powerful engines with comprehensive CIWS systems, multirole area of affect missiles for dealing with SDI's, and other strike craft, and missiles, plus a few rapid fire DEW's geared towards hitting maneuvering targets. Make them a fighter's nightmare but give them the legs to run from larger vessels. Either give them complex sensors for long range detection of incoming threats or keep the cost down by giving them a standard suite and seperately designing a EW vessel to compliment them.

Destroyers should bridge the gap between cruisers and frigates, maintaining a good deal of speed but having greater armor and firepower to tangle with heavy threats.

I agree with The Casualty about frigates:thumb:

I think that destroyers should be more missle and torpedeo carriers, supporting bigger ships but also being able to hold there own in a fight.
I would also love to see more twin-hulls

Hmph, the Werewolf Type I does look good with the "trimaran" configuration.

Frigates - you can make your own advanced Spahi and host it here. I did suggest an upgrade in the World Setting manual by giving it newer lasers and removing redundant secondary weapons to increase maneuverability.

You can also take inspiration from the SDIs' attack AI and have the FF or PC remain at standoff range (not that it would make any difference when going up against first-rate ships with proper DEW armaments).

The deadliest threat to PCGs and other small craft right now are pulse lasers. With this success you could expect a drastic increase in popularity for such weapons which would be easy to mass produce in a 61st century tech. base. Even SDIs can handle a pair of 1.5GW lasers.
