Hello all. I really like the PDS mod and i'm looking forward to version 8! Good job, really! The defence shield is a very good addition to this game, there is but one thing... The health of ships, especially Fighters and Corvettes is a bit too high. When the shield of, lets say an Interceptor, is down, it shouldn't take more than 1 or 2 hits to sink it. I actually tried to double the speed of all ships and lowering their health 10, 100 and 1000 times, and the battles between Fighters and Corvetter was COOL! But the bigger the ships went the more they sucked, mainly because while the doubled speed greatly improved the maneuverability of light ships, making them very hard to hit, didn't help heavy ships much, making them very easy to kill. I didn't have that much time to experiment with different speeds and health values, and it will need alot of work to keep the ships "in their role" and balanced. It won't work on official campaign very well either. Anyway, what do you guys think about making ships die faster after loosing their shield? Please don't make fun of my english

Yes, NGCS is cool, i donwloaded the beta, the ships are faster and guns are bigger, and they do go down faster. Maybe i am too demanding, but the fights still last a tad too long. I'll just wait till NGCS goes gold, and mess with the ship files more when i get the time. |

I don't need to hear what you think. I want to know the WHY regarding the above. If you can't provide that on the spot, then tell me when you have the time to host a dialogue on this note. This is how progress is made - the conversion of basic desires into finished end products. |

Im not here to tell you how to make your mod, i posted this to let you know what i think and to find out if other people think the same. Why make ships weaker? To make it more realistic, thats why. |

Fine. That's what you think. Now WHY do you think that! You may have some very good reasoning as to why fighters should be weaker. But without knowing what your argument is, we can't judge it. Suppositions like "it would be better if fighters didn't last as long" are worthless without the logic leading up to that conclusion. We've talked about almost every subject you can think of on this board and past incarnations of it. On almost any given topic, there is background. On this one in particular, quite a bit. ![]() |

Here's a bit of reasoning - do you think a ship could stand up to a bombardment of 2-megaton nuclear missiles? That's what HVT700s are. How about smaller kiloton-class nuclear weaponry? HVM300. Most weapons in this battlespace have nuclear warheads. That's why the ships go down so much faster nowadays.

Actually Daniel, I do think ships could stand up to those things. Very easily. But it all depends on defensive technologies. The level of technology we've set up in previous versions of PDS emphasized defensive technologies and made for long games, which I personally enjoy. But there is something to be said for reflecting real-world results when military tacticians screw up. ie, Things blow up. A lot. As for strikecraft? They're able to dodge quite nicely, they have laser PD clusters like everything else, and they have probably the most effective armor (which may be too costly to implement on larger vessels). So long as strikecraft pilots stay out of a capital's (V)CIWS grid, they'll live nice long lives. Until targeted by repeated missile salvoes, or they stick around hunter/killer frigates. So right now, offensive technologies have the edge. It's a different gametype, and I'm still warming up to it. But I am warming. Edited by Glacialis on 07-12-2005 21:12 |

Given the power of fusion drives, the development of inertial dampers and artificial gravity, and the immense efficiency of the HWverse industrial tech base - there's no reason you couldn't build a ship so thickly armored it'd be effectively immune to nuclear weapons. Add on ECM and PDS systems, and you have a formidable defense against all kinetic and missile weapons. In fact, I imagine that future PDSverse warships would be proof against anything short of next-generation DEWs and extremely high-velocity kinetic weapons. That's just the way the physics work out. "This is tactical control..."

A fraction of the PDS playerbase find our gameplay "slow" - and here is the WHY part on the apparently slowness of combat resolution. A combat environment where your units disappear when not micromanaged by the player, is one where you will not learn any tactical lessons from. The result is a WW1/WW2 pace of combat resolution rather than a modern and post-modern context adhered to in NGCS, with this quickening of pace being the resultant factor of technological and doctrinal evolutions for our warships. You won't see this evolution if your fleets "magically disappeared" after ten seconds of combat as in the stock game. Therefore, you should follow this example of concept justification in this forum. NGCS is "faster" than PDS, but not "OMG where'd they go?" like vanilla HW2. I like the fact that big ships are absolutely deadly and, even though they were before, I can feel the danger oozing out of them. I need my tea, it's too early! Genmai-cha, as always. |
