Affinity(or brainlinking)?
Zell Saldani
Though not actively playing PDS or any other mod for homeworld, I'm pretty interrested in the developement of this mod in multiple areas and therefore this post.

English isn't my native language so excuse me if I make any grammar mistakes or construct my sentences wrong, but I hope I can explain my ideas.

Karan Sjet was the first Kharakian/Hiigaran being intergrated within the control cirquits of a ship, using her own brain as a supercomputer to guide the mothership through its perilous voyage and commanding dozens of ships into combat. From what I've gathered, this system is now fully standard on all command ships to allow admirals to fully interface themselves in battle. However shouldn't be effective if every crewmember could be intergrated in this system, recieving orders by a direct "brainlink" instead of old-time communication by communication equipment. Also, it would allow the crewmember to be directly interlinked with the ship systems he/she is responsible for and would maybe allow for a greater reaction time.

I'm hoping that this is in the right forum and a valuable contribution to PDS.

it is the right forum

and i agree with you
however there will be tanks irridating in a radiant blue light etc etc as described in some fiction that has been written.

good conversation to spark
lets find backings for these facts.

crew wont be able to get out of tanks nearly in time when things get sour, let alone reach the escape pods

note escape pods are not modelled but in the time of when a ships life-o-meter goes to zero , and it blows up. I would have have long been in one of dem escape pod with the rest of ma boys n girls Pfft

I thought the tanks were for prolonged interlinking, not for short durations, but if so, then it wouldn't be very practical to have every crewmember inside a tank indeedWink

Also, that would explain why only high ranking officers are linked to the computer, since they won't be at the front lines when things go wrongSmile

But couldn't it be a future developement, getting crewmembers linked(without a life support tank) with the ships computer and AI for a greater efficiency onboard the ship?

Heh, the moment I read 'affinity' in the title, bitek and Edenism popped up in my head (Night's Dawn Trilogy) .. along with the Adamist neural nanonics. Now if only we had voidhawks and combat wasps Pfft You don't hear much about the biotech science-base in the HW2 universe, but the latter (n-nanonics) might be / is possible.

If I interpret what I've read before correctly, every (HGN, at least) crew member during combat operations is basically in their own sealed lil' light armour suits literally plugged into their seats and consoles, which is approaching that area of integration. Perhaps it's already the case? *shrug* If not, certainly worth exploring. HGN vessels are already automated for the most part with the crew directing and supervising AI taskings of repair drones, weapons loading and targetting etc, - enabling crewmen to have superior reaction times could possibly decrease the need for numbers further (since the Diamiid's still complaining about human casualties last I heard, the pansies Pfft )

A good point that the level of biotech science in HW2, beyond The S'Jet. It would seem that because of the 'novelty' of her being linked to the ship, that this has not been a normal state of affair in this particular universe. I have in my writing taken up the piece that some of the crews are incased in armored flight suits, but this is mostly the strike-craft crews, as the strike-craft are not as heavily armored and cannot afford the power for internal protective systems.

I suppose that at the technological level that the HW-universe is at a level of bio-tech must be expected. Universal translator and perhaps ?nanotech? to provide internal medical maintenance to a person would be standard stuff. There was a thread several PDS Websites ago on the likelihood that the strike-craft would in fact be ?unmanned? with crew being aboard the larger ships controlling them through cyber linkage.

It would be interesting to try and determine whether such linkages are still just one of those novelties, as we've come a long way from 3G vessels of the original campaign Smile

It might not be so unfeasable to think that major task force and fleet-level ops are orchestrated via such a mechanism, and if the cost & integration to effectiveness is good enough, perhaps more temporary smaller-scale versions have begun to wind their way into the late 4G / 5G refit and pure 5G vessels.

As for medical purposes for the almighty 'nanotech', one of those interesting ideas I've read was a short-term oxygen supplement for those emergency 'whoops, vacuum!' or 'too high gees, can't breathe' moments. Genetic engineering of stronger internal membranes to give organs a little more resilience to being thrown around under drastic manoeuvres was something else that comes to mind. I think the in-head computer-systems / remote neural interfaces I dream of are a little far off here, perhaps..

I see the subject of genetic engineering was mentioned - and I'd like opinions as to what level of proliferation would GE have with a HW2 level of technology.

GE plants and animals more resilient, productive and adaptable than their natural counterparts are great to have in a context of interplanetary colonisation, and then you can take a step further on this by selectively breeding humans in order for them to better assume their roles, which leads to a whole more lot of social issues especially if there are no nationwide opposition to widespread human GE.

You'll have families or even certain people marked before birth to be selectively genetically enhanced and the result is that a Earthlike social structure is possibly far too primitive to support such a thing...

This leads to a potentially huge separation between say, Hiigaran (Earthlike) and Vagyr (alien humanoid nation) cultures and should be studied.

I cannot see the Kiths adapting GE on a person to person scale. That would go a little too far and would be an upset to the balance that's already in place with Kith families and their members. Eugeneics can be bad enough as is, but GE would probably be highly upsetting to them.

However I don't think Vayger would have much of problem with GE people so long as they're better warriors. Any foothold like that against the Hiigarians they would take in a blink of an eye.

Regarding Kiiths and GE - the large amounts of foreign immigrants now on Hiigaran territory due to the war may pose a huge issue in provoking anti-GE activity.

Even some of Hiigara's allies like the Cush which are less technologically advanced may see GE as a godsend - likewise people of other cultures now living with Hiigarans may be born GE'd or have no cultural/ethical restrictions regarding the use of GE on human subjects.

Not just restricting GE enthuisiasm to plans for Vagyr supremacy in warfare, a spacefaring people will definately find the prospect of more easily linking with their ships (or ship's subsystems) a desirable one.

However, the Hiigarans too with their need for a capable spaceborne capability and military deterrence will also find such prospects desirable - but due to cultural restrictions, Hiigarans may prefer to just provide a measure of cybernetics enhancements to their people and leave it as that. Going the extra step to create elite, genetically engineered military family trees to secure a corps of capable officers may be an extra, unnecessary step that should be restricted to cultures like the Imperial Taiidani and Vagyr.

A GE officer is not a war winning weapon, and may be an advantage neutralised with Hiigaran culture (freedom of speech, multi-racial tolerance etc) and quality from training and doctrinal advantages. Furthermore, human capability is very unpredictable - using GE to bring to life a super-strong, super fast soldier is one thing, but IQ is another matter entirely.

Now, on the GE supersoldiers thing I'll leave the discussion open.

I thought the Imperial Taiidani did use GE and was the emporer not from a line of GE creations?

Anyways, if GM supersoldiers were more feasable, they would mostly likely to be employed by Higarians. I suspect that Keran her self had a bit of Genetic modification as well as cybernetic augmentation as apparent in her age and lack of any other refrences to the long life spans of other Higarians.

And how much genetic altering of people is required before natual evolution beings to kick in and accelerate the adaption of the body in ever changing space environments? The Protectors of the Garden of Kadesh must have went some genetic changes of the course of their thousand years in the nebula backed by their religion.

Maybe in the end, there's no need to have a GE society if those gaps can be filled with the abilites found in some family lines.

Just an idle thought on the matter- perhaps (just an idea, shoot me down if it's daft) some if not all of the 'original' Sobani did utilise GE to a degree. I do understand that early Kith Soban were different to the current, but a few of the slightly more beneficial applications of gene vectoring (<- right terminology? little rusty here) might have been applied to aid the few before they began accepting 'recruits', as such.

I wouldn't personally think that GE 'supersoldiers' were prevalent anyway, but merely tougher, more resilient, slightly stronger regular joes. Anything beyond that would likely involve artificial muscle grafts, skeletal reinforcement etc. Technology provided, I could see 'boosted' soldiers being quite the nasty little Vaygr shocktroopers, along with whichever other nation or Kiith saw that as desirable for certain marine crews

Sorry, I have made too quick a snap judgement on the Hiigarians and their use of GE. Some genetic utilisation must have happened based on the evidence in 200 years they manage to produde 180+ Million people from a stock of only 600,000 survivors. Unless perhaps they happen to live a long time, a point made by the Protectors since in a thousand years they had thirteen generations.(13 gens over 1000 years is one generation living at least 76 years)

Hmm, I must say that Hiigara would be a good point of immigration in the years after the Exodus and especially during the Invasion. Add that to the already-existing formerly Taiidani population on the planet and its easy to see that true Kushanis are the minority.

Multiculture and the social support/education to back that is thus mandatory for Pax Hiigara's survival.
