A Matter of Opinion - ship designations

Prince of Persian Carpets says:
I was thinking - we on Earth use arbitrary terms to use as nouns for certain types of ship design trends.

Prince of Persian Carpets says:
Dreadnaught, monitors etc.

Prince of Persian Carpets says:
Thusly I was thinking of our trend of battlecarriers and multi role capital ships in PDS - like the V7.1 LiirHra being a combination DEW assault and missile cruiser.

Prince of Persian Carpets says:
And battleship/carriers etc

Prince of Persian Carpets says:
Would "conquistador" be a good noun for that kind of ship design?

Subject in the MSN quote above - "Conqueror" class ships to go with Dreadnaughts and Monitors from RL?

Here's some feedback I got:

Zenprime:
Hmm, Yes and no. The word fits, but the feeling I get when I say it, doesn't give me that PDS tingle of excitement

D. Hawking:
Conqueror.
Indeed.

What would the attributes of such a class be? Would this be another name for "Cruiser"?

well, maybe if my big huge BBX was named the Imperial Conqueror or the Vaygr Conqueror,or smething, then yes. But,other than that..it just doesn't feel right...

But,it would raise morale, saying "Bring in the Vaygr Conqueror." or something, if morale was a factor in HW2.

Perhaps these extra namings should be kept to a ship of notible acts in battle. As in the case of Starwars, the Exicuitor. Name of the ship, but it's classification was Super Star Destroyer, also similar to the Ecipise which was like the ultimate Star Destroyer.

Conquistador would signify a battlecarrier type all-purpose offensive capital ship, much like Dreadnaught in the real world history means a all-big-gun battleship with main batteries fully traversable.

This should be the point of feedback - and note that I deliberately do not use the term Dreadnought in PDS as I'd like a personalised (to PDSverse) set of names like these.

Glacialis
While a personalized set of generic class names sounds like a good idea, Conquistador is not a name that sounds right to me. Will have to think on this. So far I've been unable to come up with any names for any PDS class/role that I like.

TelQuessir
Good reasoning. Should be a good starter point for universe-specific naming conventions.

Moving to the Port once more people comment.

Should have a few scenarios with ships of their own name... and add some in to SP game. Like the DDX StarSlayer and DD Angel's Sword. Infact,is it possible to add in a naming feature for your ships?lol

Conquistador implies victory in itself. Either You are one or not. if You are not, well...

I am all for the possibilty to name ship classes, and perhaps even larger vessels individually, on the other hand who would want to see the QJE and related named Cinderella-class?

BlackHawk - send me a PM explaining how on-topic your post is. You've one day to accomplish that simple task.

I like the idea of PDS-unique names but, as stated above, Conquistador has the wrong texture.

Suggest we look to the historical Middle and Far East for inspiration, as that may fit better with the PDS flavor.

Hmm...fast-moving, powerful carrier vessels...I'll need to think on this. Throwing out names that CAN be used for ship classes:
Juggernaught - for large, 'inexorable' offensive vessels
Animal names: scorpion, wolf/wolfpack, spider, predator
Myrmidon (seems like it might fit a corvette or frigate)
Stilleto, Rapier (for precision-attack craft.)

I'm sure more will pop into my head as the day progresses...will check back.

Use 'Jagannath' for a 5G evolution of the old Valdez/Vaygr Flagship hull. :-P Unlike the HGN mothership, that hull seems fairly combat-effective.
