Unpacking and Repacking BIG files

Tool: UnfBig version 1.41
Available: http://www.homeworldaccess.net/downlo...p?cat_id=8
Choose the "Proper Setup" package.

This tool comes with a proper Windows Setup Installation Script that I made for it.
It should be compatible with all Windows versions.

Follow these instructions(also included in setup):
-----------------------------------------------------
Introduction and information from Unfunf at:
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthrea...hp?t=57985

THIS IS FROM MY EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH UnfBig 1.41.
I have failed to locate version 1.42.

All registering of needed DLL and OCX files is done automatically by the Setup, so make sure You download that. I have both available at hwaccess..

- SPACES
The Setup will urge You to install the program in a folder whose
path contains NO SPACES. After some testing it seems that UnfBig
handles SPACES in file names/folders, poorly.

That is valid for Your Mod names, Big-file Names and
output directory names/paths.

DO NOT USE SPACES!!!

- DOS WINDOW
During ALL operations a DOS WINDOW (black background, white text, normally) will be visible and go away when finished. This is NORMAL.

- WORKING DIRECTORY
For simplicity I suggest You just use the UnfBig program folder as working directory. You can have multiple subdirectories to sort out different mods. Remember, no spaces.

- LUA
You may extract Lua. Check "LuaDC" in UnfBig File>LuaDC.
If checked, and if You have NOT extracted the .big file it will give You a quick Error (can not find the extracted .big-files) but it will proceed with extracting lua directly from the .big-file without extracting any other files.

- UPGRADING A MOD VERSION
Prerequisites:
1) The Mod comes in big-file.
2) The developer has released new files to update current that are not in big-file for smaller filesize and quicker download.

DO NOT USE YOUR HOMEWORLD 2 DIRECTORY AS WORKING FOLDER!

1. Make a new directory inside the default UnfBig directory.
Example: use mods name and version. C:\UnfBig\pds70
(assuming You installed UnfBig as C:\UnfBig...)

2. Copy over any Mod.big file from HW2 Data-folder to this directory
You created in 1.

3. Use UnfBig. Set the Output Directory to the one You created.
Open the .big-file by hitting Open Big File.
Extract the Mod. The extraction will create NEW directory with the name of the original .big-file. If the .big-file was named "pds70.big" the directory will be named "pds70".

4. Open that directory. The following folders should be inside:
\ai
\art
\badges
\effect
\leveldata
\missiles
\scripts
\ship
\sound
\soundscripts
\subsystem
\ui
\weapon

I ASSUME it would be the same directories for all complete GamePlay Mods for HW2.

5. Get the updated version file from the developer.
Open it somewhere else. Copy all folders within it (similar structure
to the one above) in over the folder in step 4, overwriting files and folders. If You get no warning of overwrite You have probably messed up something.

Now You have updated the Mod. Lets pack it.

1. Rename the folder with the Mod name to something else.
If You had "pds70" rename it "pds71" reflecting an update, or use any number given as update version by the Developer.
YOU SHOULD RENAME IT!!!
Else it will overwrite the original file you started off with, not altering names, and that may be confusing.

2. Use UnfBig. Hit the Open Folder button. Select the folder
You modified and that we in this example named "pds71".
When visible and selected inside UnfBig, hit the button Create Big File. It will create a .big-file named as the folder in the same folder the original is.

3. Now You should have a file we in this example call "pds71.big"
Copy it over to Your Homeworld \Data folder from which You took the original pds70.big file. Now You should have two PDS (example) big-files.

4. Shortcut. Assuming You have a working shortcut for (example) pds70.big on Your desktop, just COPY-PASTE it to create another. Then open its properties and change path (example)

"C:\Program Files\Sierra\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -mod pds70.big

in to

"C:\Program Files\Sierra\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe" -mod pds71.big

Name the shortcut accordingly.
And DO NOT mess up the quotation marks. They are correct here.

You may have several Mods, no reason to delete the original shortcut
or the original .big-file. Just set the Shortcut Properties path correctly.
