I played through a modified starship duel game with the new Majiiran, and although having practically no secondary armament sucked, it was fun to beat the ever-loving crap out of an Al-Khalid with minimum effort. Then I got to thinking... ...after doing a little research, I've realised that the new Battlestar design is on scale with the Mothership herself, which says something blindingly obvious to me. 'The sheer size of the vessel itself and the number of systems...yada yada...the bridge crew numbered in the hundreds. It was clear that in an emergency, there would be communications paralysis' or something like that, from the manual for the original Homeworld. If you don't remember how this problem was solved, you're not paying enough attention. My question is this: is the Majiiran AI-controlled, partially or completely? Or has their been some sort of breakthrough in command protocol or whatever? Or are the Battlestars each piloted by some crazy-ass neuroscientist like the great S'jet herself? (I have a very roundabout way of asking questions, don't I?) |

Well if the History of Hiigara pdf(Can't remember where I got if from, Homeworld Shipyards maybe?) is considered cannon(It did say the text was from relic), by the time of the Invasion there were others who also had neural link jacks. I was about to ask something close to this myself. Does the HGN employ the neural links in its fleet? Is it common enough to be used on frigates, or is it restricted to only some taskforce flagships? ![]() ![]() Bring it on. I've mastered multiple forms of Pink! [small]Zenprime is dead. Well no |

Then again, there could have been some major breakthroughs in the AI field. One would assume that there'd been developments since the time of the return to Hiigara in HW1. One question that really boggles my mind though...How'd they transfer S'jet around if she's jacked into the 1st HW mothership? I'm referring to transferring her from the 1st HW mothership to the 2nd HW mothership ("At the great derelict at Tanis, construction of a new mothership is underway"), and from the 2nd mothership to Sajuuk. Actually, at the end of HW1, the very final frame of the last cutscene shows her standing in the bay of a shuttle as it opens on the HGN homeworld. She was in fact 'unjacked' (dejacked?) for that. As far as being transfered to Sajuuk in HW2, maybe she was setup in a sort of universal adapter. Best example I can think of is a external hard drive. An external HD is just an internal HD mounted in a case with a special interface to make it USB compatable. Allows xfer to several systems with no muss, no fuss. This of course assumes the Sajuuk OS is compatable...maybe the Progenitors ran Unix... ![]() FastCargo "Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the social group without being willing to pay - and claims a halo for his dishonesty."

There has been much discussion before on this. For instance it is canon (from a Relic bit of art) that the Bloodhound has a crew of 25. That is either two crews of eleven or three crews of seven and a command team (the remainder). In the development of the Liir Hra class we came to the conclusion that it has a compliment of seventy five in two crews of thirty five and a command team of five. Fleet carrier have huge crews for both fleet command capabilities but also replacement crews for the strike-craft and frigate class that could be built. It seems likely that even if we assume the crewmembers are somehow cyber-linked there could be several hundreds associated with the larger combatants. There have also been several discussions about the automation of the strikecraft (like present day UCAV concepts) in order to reduce ship compliments and the number of casualties suffered by the HGN. Ironically in the RW there are actually people working on AI to a level that would allow command teams to operate UCAV in a manner (philosopically) like we do in HW2PDS. Namely "go here, attack this, RTB" dynamically. In my fiction the Diiamid is demanding the HGN come up with ways to reduce casualties through much higher levels of automation on the ships (there are already "Maintbots" doing the repair and upkeep) and turning the strike-craft into UCAV capable. |

Perhaps something like the OCtattos in Pandora's star (a book by Peter Hamilton,) basically they were a wireless antenna/computer system worked into the body to allow usage of computers and the like. |

Or nanonics, from his earlier 'Night's Dawn' trilogy. Less showy, utilising nanotech, and highly adaptable. |

And also part of the Cataclysm fluff was that she was watching over Hiigara from the Mothership, still interfaced, when the Kiith Somtaaw borrowed the production facilities of the Mothership. |

I'd imagine they unplugged the interface from the mothership rather than the woman from the interface. Oh and I like the idea of nanonics, if it's workable. Edited by Nemmerle on 03-10-2005 11:39 |

Yeah at the beginning of HW1 it said something like 'Karan S'jet chose to be permanently connected to the mothership'. Can't remember what it actually said, but it's something like that... |

It also says at the end that she's unplugged. |

Well, I can't remmeber word for word, but the jist is she survived the surgery to remove her, so I'd guess it wasn't as easy as just pulling the plug. However who knows how evolved the interface has become, afterall she was the first, doesn't mean she's the only one. |

Have you installed the correct device drivers? In the opening cinematic of HW2 the connection she has to the mothership doesn't look that substantial, especially when compared to the one seen on Makaan. So I'd say that the Higarans are a long distance ahead in that area. |

Or that she's not connected as fully? A (mother)ship only interface as aposed to be connected to the empire fully? S'jets not a Dictator like the rest. |

I don't think it's likely. Makaan is limited by the technology of the era and the coms system of his ships. "Go there and kill that" is going to be the same command however you issue it. While it's true that he might like lots of information there's only so much the human mind can do at once so I don't think that it would link him into the entire empire in that way. |

Yeah...it's likely that your neurons would go into emergency shutdown from information overload if you tried to control more than one ship with a mind. As it is, Karan's brain is a nexus for the mothership's operations. She's hooked up about her body, as you will notice in the cutscenes. That's life support. Her involuntary systems have been shunted to tasks like (in the original) controling the conditions of the cryogenic capsules, and stuff of that nature. For a reference of another take on harnessing a brain for the central nexus of a facility, look at an old ST: Original Series episode where a female-dominated civilization hi-jack Spock's brain to run their maintinance cycles in an underground complex. |
