Computer: Code Red
Thorin
I'm in pretty deep trouble over here. I managed to remove (I think) the virus...but it did seemingly irreperable damage. I think.

I need some assistance creating a new partition to reinstall Windows on, I think. Please help?

Get your Windows CD, and whack it in the CD drive - boot your PC and start there. The set-up program is easy to understand.

If you wish to savlage anything try and burn it, or copy it from your hard drive (would require another computer) to another hard drive; of course don't copy the virus!

The easiest to save Your files would be to take out Your harddrive and plug it in to another computer, with working-updated-antivirus, and just copy the files on to cd/dvd/harddrive.
After that, wipe the drive and reinsert it into Your own PC and do a new Windows setup. During setup, delete existing partitions, assign one new, limiting its space, then assign another in the free space.

Catch me on MSN for more advice, if I am available...

If you merely want to replace your windows file.... then get your windows disk and replace all your current windows file with the ones fresh off the disk. You don't lose anything at all I believe.

Not sure this works, only done this when I've been missing .cad files and other system stuff.

He can not do that without some tedious extracting procedure.
What You imply might be done via a Repair setup, but for that he needs the EXACT version of Windows available on CD. We dont know if he has a SP1 streamlined CD or a SP2 or a non SP.

Hell, we dont know whether he has a genuine MS Win cd or some oem "recovery" shit. We just know to little thus far...

Aye. It'd be nice to know what virus and what symptoms our dear Thorin is experiencing / has experienced.

This would be so much easier if MSN actually worked on my computer (on a different one right now). In fact, just about an hour after posting this thread, Firefox also died on me.

I'll see if I can get myself a cheap HD of at least 60 GB somewhere that I can back up the important stuff on (I measured my HW2 directory along. due to archived mods, it's over 2 gigabytes).

And to the side, I actually do have a windows cd in my room, that my dad doesn't seem to miss. Smile

Thanks for all the advice.

EDIT: On symptoms:

It seems that this is a mark 2 of the virus that ousted me from my first computer. It changed my homepage to this spyware advert, without changing the address. Also, that address was perminantly affixed with the spyware advert on my computer.
Also, it kept dumping a virus designated Troj_Dropper by Trend Micro, my primary antivirus. However, the culprit dropping the Troj_Droppers was still at large.

Spybot: Search and Destroy managed to narrow it down to wininit.dll, an important dll. I was forced to remove it, and replace it with the barely healed version from my old hard drive. After that, the desktop disappeared, as well as the start bar. Most programs closed instantly, and eventually the task manager itself closed spontaneously when attempting to run programs through it.

EDIT2: The computer sorcerer (my brother) has spoken. He essentially suggested the same as you guys have, though he promised to walk me through the maneuver of installing a fresh version of Windows over the existing folder to enable me to burn my important stuff to CD before the reformat. So...yeah. Thanks, guys.

EDIT3: *whistles tunelessly while backing up files* Well, I discovered this delightful way to do quick repairs. You go along with the Windows installation until it shows you older installations of Windows present on the drive. Press "R" with the directory of the version selected, and install as if you are building a fresh version onto the computer. Seems to be working, but I'm going to back up and reformat just to be on the safe side.

Backing up my 5.3 GB (!) HW2 directory is going to be a challenge, though...not including the...uh...well, not much else I really really need, now that I think of it. lol.
