If you would have to join to army and you could chose what(and why) you could do, what would you chose ?? You can chose anything from commando to Kitchen Chief (NO, you can't pick Space navy you PDS freak ).Anyway here is what I would pick. Infantry - no, I'm not too fit to march, run long distances. Armour - unless someone invent a power armour, I'll always think that it's nothing more than a metal coffin. Navy - I'd love to but (dunno why) I'm afraid of open sea (well not open sea itself, but to be leave alone at open sea). If I would have to, I would chose surface navy. Submarines ?? No thanks, underwater coffin. Planes - well it's a dream of every boy and girl, my too, but I'm a realist, If I don't fit to infantry then I don't fit to planes too .Helicopters/Gunships - That's what I would chose, you don't have to be a superman like plane pilots, but still you have you life in you own hands and skills (Comparing to tank pilot who would have to beg sky flyboys to keep a sky over your chead clear). |

I would choose either mobile/mechanized infantry or armored cav. As part of a mobile infantry unit you get the best of all worlds. You get carted around in armored vehicles or chartered helicopter flights. Plus, you're also infantry which is probably the safest of frontline assignments. Tanks, 'copters and planes are big targets. Then again, armored cav would be cool, because tanks are awesome. Especially the M1A1 Abrams. |

Air Cavalry all the way baby!!! 23 years of it, best adventure I could have asked for. Marines, best infantry job in the world (as long as you can tolerate having to live with the Navy pukes {plug for Marines, traditional insult from an Army guy at the Navy pukes}). |

Staff officer - Intelligence and/or Operations. i just like reading reports and figuring out stuff, then cackle with glee as the enemy crashes against the strongest part of the defense or suddenly finds himself cut of, surrounded and due for an airstrike. Plus, I strongly believe that good officers win the battle before the shooting starts - or at least try. |

Dude helicopters are tougher by far to fly then aircraft, consider how many Apache's have simply crashed when flying around normally, you need to be more then just superman for those things. That said those things would probably be the most fun once you get a hang of it, especially if you can get your hands on some Kamov's *drool* |

Since in about a month and a half I am going to ship out for ranger training with the Army I would have to say Army. (I hope I can make it) "Rangers lead the way!" Edited by revan on 27-09-2005 18:48 |

Good luck on Ranger training. I hope you survive. I'm a little more timid on that side. I hope to be ready for bootcamp myself by December for the Army. I'm planning on being a communications officer. |

Actually, I got to be what I always wanted to be since I was old enough to know what a plane was...a USAF aviator. I even got to fly one of my favorite weapons systems that I drooled over when I was a kid...a B-1B. After hand flying 1.1 Mach at 300 feet in a 'Bone'...everything else just seems SLOW! If it sounds like bragging...well, a little. Mainly, it's enthusiasm...I get to do what ALWAYS I wanted to do when I was a kid. In a way, I get to never grow up (and so, grow old). Now I fly T-38s (twin engine supersonic trainer) for the USAF and fly for a major cargo carrier as well. There are times (seeing the sunset over the ocean, doing formation maneuvering) when I think 'Wow, they actually pay me for this?'. And there are times (sitting and cringing through a trainee's first landing attempt at 180 miles an hour, missing my wife and son) that I think 'I wonder what an office job would be like'. I've been lucky, I'm still in good health, and have all my pieces and parts. I've seen too many friends not be so lucky. The risks we take... R&D Thats where i would be mostlikly, looking into the future for our armed forces (US). Developmental work on new weapon systems, defensive systems, and general relavance for Military application. Someone has to make new toys for the ones that use them.

i've always wondered what its like to be a real sniper.... but realistically, id probably end up becoming a computer technician simply because i have crap for physical strength endurance etc. hey, somebody's gotta write the code for your beloved tomahawk guidance system. |

Fast Cargo, know exactly about what you mean about being lucky. I too have several friend who are not with us any more. As the old saying goes: "I'd rather be lucky than good." I gotta tell you that 300 feet at 1.1 has got to be a rush, but 50 feet at 100knots, waving at the 911's on the autobahn as you zip past them, has a certain rush to it too. The other nice thing about boppin' around at less than your landing speed is that you can enjoy the view... like the small lakes with fine specimens of the opposite sex, enjoying the sun with exceedingly liberal clothing policy. Or the ability to land near said lake and chat with said sun bathers. Of course that it exceendingly 'old school' and no longer politically correct, of course neither is waking up under the pool table of the O'club on Saturday morning. ![]() revan - Rangers DO lead the way! Nothing I would not do for those boys. The course is VERY physical, but most of the hard is mental. Just remember to take care of your Ranger Buddies and they will take care of you. GOOD LUCK!! relax - some of the bravest people I have had the honor to serve with have been Medics. They never have to buy beer down range. Minime - you want to work R&D, make sure you got an Engineering background. Make sure you get some management under your belt as well. |

I always wondered what Aircav would be like...where 100 feet is high! Plus there is that added bonus of being able to land anywhere you want... I still laugh at the video I've seen floating around the net...I think it was an AH-64? "Think we can make through there?" "Nope" "Oh ye of little faith, look how much room there is" (Sound of rotor striking trees...) I assume those guys landed okay...their careers on the other hand.... Regards! Yeah they got the aircraft down OK. Pilot in Command is well... not one any more. Hey the other guy got a new flight suit for the deal! Some times you can't get those stains out. ![]() |

@ yasotay: oh believe me i know what you mean, but that was just more or less a 'dreamy' type of thing, probably should of added that. if i applied real world to this then i'd be looking at Marine Pilots, and flighting of one of the following three possibilities: AV-8B Harrier 2 (Jumpjet), F-35B STVOL, JSF (Joint Strike Fighter), or V-22 Osprey Transport, my dad was a Marine (early 70's), and he missed the Vietnam war by just a few months, he was gonna be drafted, but volunteered instead and got into the Marines that way. so in essances i would just be tagging on to something semi-familiar, becuase of my dad.
