tractor beam (just hear me out)
Phoenix
Ok, back in the old HW1 days there were salvage tactica using corvette hulls with beam weapons that could neutralize much larger vessels systems and tow them to port for capture.

Now there are countermeasures in place at present to prevent a small vessel from simply disabling a ship.

Now not only did the salv corvs disable, but tow bigger ships, but they were small and had to be close in to do it.

This towing thing, uses a beam to do it, mounted on a larger ship, with a MUCH bigger power source and you could use it to slow down enemy ships, stop thier engines without even having to get behind them and take out that bloody engine.

I don't know if such a thing can be programed in the game but it would make sense, given that the technology exists and it would be in folowing with Kushan strategy, dunno if the Higarans have strayed to far from the old to give up using beam weapons to stop ships engines, like the modern Higaran bording ships beam to stop enemy engines.

So why not modify the tractor beam to exert pulling and pushing forces on the target to rend it apart at the welds, literally?

That's yet another primary weapon for a capital ship. In other words, your concept doesn't hold water. Plus, I'm sure we'd all prefer hurling plasma, particle beams and missiles at each other until we can actually justify the concept of a tractor, repulsor, or even tractor-repulsor beam.

I always saw this funny that Salvage corv. could tow much bigger ship.
They are simply too small to tow capitals. Something like bull and few men trying to hold it. If I would be a commander of potential captured ship. I would hit pedal to the metal and tow the towers back to my base Grin
That's why HW2 Marine ships fit better to that role.

Salvage corvettes use AI to override ship systems and makes the ship tow itself back into the mothership. Hence why salvage corvettes don't have a plasma trail when they're hooked onto a frigate.

There's no tractor beam involved.

And I agree with Tel, if a utility option could be used as an offensive weapon, then it is not a utility option at all.

There was once a Pirate mod (not sure if thats still around) where the pirates had a tractor frigate that was essentially an ion frigate except its beam was yellow and it pulled whatever ship it shot towards it. lol imagine my suprise when i see a vaygr shipyard with capital ship module on it shooting towards my wall of frigates at speeds that would make a fighter green with envy. Funniest thing EVER.

Warman - Go read about Isaac Newton's laws of motion. Then apply them (mainly the "every action has an equal and opposite reaction) bit to he scenario to see why it wouldn't work Smile. You would end up with the shipyard sitting almost dead still and the frigate getting reeled in by its own beams.

I just figured that another way of stoping the vagyr from using the masive gun on thier BCs would be nice, considering that all hig ships are outguned without it barring a well piloted lirha.

Since we have thrown all magical "hacking" devices out of the window and ran the usual main battle tanks over them...

Empathy: A terrorist hacks into a US carrier battle group, and proceeds to attack other US and civil assets with it. Sound logical to you?

I don't see any utility of this thread but random deliberations - thanks for the three in this thread who attempted constructive conversation!
