I have read various ideas for the new version and I was wondering what people thought of this one that I had. One of the ideas that I have seen tossed around was the idea of maps large enough so that players could have different lines (front lines, repair/rearm lines, and then far back production lines). The one problem I have always had when I attempt to do such a battle (and I bet most people agree with) is that it takes soo long to set up the game so that you have a more or less layered defense, and one problem is that hyperspacing can get around walls of inhibitors (just go above/below/left/right) so they are almost (not totally) worthless. The idea is that the game could be set up with most of the stuff already built and maybe with some twists. For example, instead of a mothership that can move (however slowly an hyperspace enhanced), you have an immobile shipyard type facility (better then an actual shipyard though, and perhaps capable of capital ship docking). Around this base could actually be a shell of inhibitors (with some light defenses already in place) or perhaps the base has a massive inhibitor (would cut down on units ingame). There could be some small resupply bases with perhaps the ability to produce utility ships and fighters, possibly corvettes as well. Or even a range of such bases from just utilities, to ones that could even build a destroyer. These bases would be pretty well defended from the start (to prevent early fighter rushes). The main point of all this being, that the base security and such is already set up and you would just have to build ships to go and fight the other guy and try and break through his defenses. The bases could be repaired if they take damage (though would be alot slower then ships for fairness). An additional part is that perhaps a player could have the ability to produce some new bases and they would have a one movement use such as for probes. They could not hyperspace at all. And how fast they would move should be up for discussion, and steps taken to prevent abuse of this (building a bunch of bases and charging them at the enemy). One way to make having all these units possible, is that most of the defensive units could be controlled by a computer player who is allied with you. One advantage of this is that you could reverse the situation and have the defenses around your base be the enemies, and that way instead of attacking his defenses from the safety of your own, you must first break out of the shell surrounding you before you can head over to attack him. So what do you guys think? (And yes, I know if someone were to actually make such a map, it would take hours and hours of work to set up). |

Brilliant but as you said the problem is making it happen. |

That would be fun as hell. However as Tel pointed out it requires a lot of work, besides not even the base of v12 has been completed (or has it? ), thus this can be eventually postponed until v12 is up and running. One more thing that i can't help noticing is the resemblance to WW1 trench warfare, which is in my opinion absurd in space. A ship could take out a stationary object much easier than the station can neutralize the ship. Shipyards and stations in my vision of the HW universe are ''buried'' in megaliths constructed of materials far tougher than any in present galactic standards. However I always liked sieges and a map or two that focus on such ''trench warfare'' is a great idea. |

Awesome. I hear like half of my ideas in there

I think the inspiration for comming up with all this stuff was half of your ideas Admiral. On another note, I am curious about how hard it is to place a structure/unit on a map for HW2. If creating maps is easy(ish), then I might be able to spend some of the next two months (looong vacation) making a map for this. The good news is I have the time (and hopefully) the patience to take a good wack at the map, the problem is, my copy of HW2 is 900 miles away. Hopefully a situation that will be rectified within a week and a half. |

One, Excellent. And two...If the map editor for HW2 is easy to use..or at least, won't take me more than a day or two to figure out, I'd do it. Never tried, so I dunno.[/sounds like an idiot] "With all this power at its disposal, there is no question that the Beast Mothership is currently the most dangerous vessel in the Galaxy. It is not just a starship. What we need is something along the lines of FRED (from Freespace 2), only for Homeworld 2. Unfortunately, making that editor would probably be more than a task than creating all of our complex missions by hand in notepad.
Welcome to the internet

If anyone can find the graphical editor, I'll buy you a drink. Also, how exactly does the notepate/text editor one work? Where do I find files to add such things? And would I be able to make objects that automatically are controlled by one person? (Like, the defenses would be controlled by an AI of a player). Edited by Warman1 on 26-06-2008 06:24 |

you open a standard map file found in pds (so you won't have to decompile the hw2.big file), open it with notepad, find which line controls what (try the Karos graveyard site for that, although i hear it's in bad shape) and play with it. |

Does anyone happen to know of an easy way to get ahold of a copy of HW2? It seems that mine will not be able to be recovered or about a month or so. |

Actually, I just got home from my vacation, for a vacation from the vacation (go back later this week), and I was able to find the CD and its key! Thanks for the info though, when I get back out to where my better equipment is, I will look into this stuff. |

Does the missionmaker actually make a mission, or could it be used to just make a map? |
