List of key Vaygr Battlefleet Task Forces
dohyung
While Hiigaran Fleet Divisions place heavy emphasis on tactical agility and element of surprise, Vaygr Battlefleet Task Forces rely on absolute superiority in firepower and resilience. This is evident in both their fleet composition and tactics ? overwhelming face-to-face brute force combined with flexibility and capital-class armor. Any frontal assault launched by a Hiigaran Fleet Division would be thwarted without a scratch.

Originally every element of Vaygr Navy could operate individually through a remote command posts set up by various types of command corvettes/frigates stationed all around the sector prior to an offensive. But ever since HGN claimed tactical superiority through small divisions, many Vaygr commanders found themselves overwhelmed by the sheer amount of small ?raid groups? they had to command. In a short period of time, many Vaygr raid groups found themselves lacking proper tactical information and command to keep them functional in all sectors of the galaxy.

To solve this problem, thousands of Vaygr military strategists and commanders spent months fabricating a type of small-scale fleet with its own command structure, capable of neutralizing all types of threat in a reasonably short amount of time. Officially named Vaygr Battlefleet Task Force, they are more commonly known as Battlefleet.

The major difference between a division and a battlefleet is the structure. While a division relies on specialization, a battlefleet includes all types of ships ranging from mightiest of battleships to small frigates capable of locking down enemy ships. Essentially, each battlefleet is capable of encountering any threat without outside support and can spearhead any attack into any unknown sectors of the galaxy.

By nature each battlefleet is top-heavy with capital ships and heavy frigates with a relatively light complement of strike crafts just enough to neutralize enemy bomber threat. A single battlefleet can easily dwarf a HGN division in terms of size. It is a common joke among the veterans of HGN that Vaygr fighters and frigates exist solely to draw fire away from the capital ships.

It should also be noted that Vaygr do not decommission ships based on aged technology. Unlike HGN whose lack of properly trained ship crews allow for resources to further upgrade their existing tech, Vaygr war industry can barely keep up with its vast number of enlisted personnel. It is rumored that nearly 43% of war-capable Vaygr citizens are enlisted to active military duty which includes a wide range of occupational fields from a lowly war factory worker to an honored crew member of a large battlefleet. This does not mean that Vaygr possess underpowered ships ? their old and reliable ships have proven their sheer longevity in combat many times over.

Listed below are what's commonly known as "Battlefleet Major." There are total of 19 Battlefleet Majors in service today with the exception of Battlefleet VIII which suffered heavy casualties from the 111th "Underdog" Stealth Division while defending an asteroid belt. All other smaller battlefleets are known as "Battlefleet Minor" and they're usually identified with a serial number largely due to the sheer number of Battlefleet Minors in service today.

Also commonly known as Battlefleet Victory, their job is to spearhead all major operations and provide escort for expeditionary resource operations fleet. For this, Battlefleet I is one of the biggest and best equipped battlefleets in Vaygr Navy. Following the traditional Vaygr doctrine of being top-heavy with capital ships, Battlefleet I maintains and deploys number of top-of-the-line capital ships capable of plowing through any Hiigaran Fleet Divisions in a head-on assault.

Battlefleet VI

While force organization list is avaliable for most battlefleets, Battlefleet VI is the only battlefleet to have its composition, location, and name of admiral completely under secrecy.

With the increasing threat from HGN counterattacks and stealth divisions doing cripple-raids on battlefleets under maintenance in their own home system, it became apparent that many vital industrial planets and colonized resource-harvesting worlds would be under constant threat from HGN if left undefended. Recently pulled out of the frontlines, Battlefleet VI's exact locations remain a closely guarded secret to protect the locations of key Vaygr resource operations and science facilities hidden inside gas clouds.

Nothing's known about Battlefleet VI except for the old fleet composition files and the fact that it guards numerous secret military installations and large-scale resource operations. With such secrecy and a generous amount of Vaygr bureaucracy, Battlefleet VI has the right to shoot down ANY incoming crafts regardless of its faction - and has reportedly done so in countless occassions.

(The following list is the composition of Battlefleet VI prior to its new assignment)

? Command Barge
Death - Al-Khalid Type-G Heavy Command Battleship
? Command Barge Escort
Oracle - Khalifah II Flotilla Leader
Icarus - Khalifah II Flotilla Leader

Battlefleet IX
i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/dorrus/16a32a7a.jpg

A combined result of vast Vaygr resources and reverse-engineered Hiigaran mass-cloaking field technology, all but the smallest fighters in Battlefleet IX are capable of stealth. The only battlefleet with stealth field technology, Battlefleet IX is under constant demand by many major battles and is sometimes forced to undergo maintenance while in transit to another battlefield. Despite being widely known to both Hiigara and Vaygr military, Battlefleet IX's whereabouts and destinations are successfully kept under secret.

I see tons and tons of scenario opportunity there, thanks for the hard work.

dohyung - i can only second Tel's appreciation for your work. I am particularly impressed with the logic of the battle commands evolution that you express in the introduction.

While I might academically argue that 43% of the population being active participants would not allow for a normal society activity nesessary for a long war, this is science fiction and we could argue away some of the normal things to mechanical efforts.

I do see though that you infer that the Makaan is still alive. I don't know if you have had opportunity to read some of the PDS'verse history, but many of the somewhat canon aspect (such as the independent Vaygr) are derived from the demise of the Makaan while attempting to acquire the three core. Of course this is your universe and can have whatever you like in it.

Again marvelous work.

I'll make appropriate changes on the Makaan matter. Where can I find the history section of PDS? I've just recently started playing Homeworld/PDS and it's quite fascinating.

As for 43% of the population being part of the military, I mean everything that has to do with the war - planet-bound shipyards, weapon factories, police forces, and the like. I forgot to add that most of the combined Vaygr coalition (should I call it that since Makaan is dead?) production infrastructure is run by the Vaygr military, and all workers and personnel working in such facilities are considered part of the military and trained so by the law. Sorry for the confusion.

By all means, please point out any possible mistakes I've made or areas where I've overstepped the boundaries other RP threads have set up. After all, I'm dedicating this to PDS.

Once I clear up my RL schedule you'll see some BattleFleet Gothic type scenarios on the table.

Mobilised today, so no update for NGCS unfortunately. Add that to my martial training.

Might be a completely redundant thing to suggest, but I'm just looking at all these capital ship names. Anybody thought of translating all that stuff into actual Vaygr(ese?) Same could be said of the HGN forces in the opposite thread...
Just a suggestion.

TelQuessir
If you see Vagyrese as Arabic/Tamil + drow language and HGN as modern English then the translation is pretty easy to do. Adds some racial distinction in naming conventions, etc.

Personally I'm not a fan of the HW speak - but it is a valid item of tradition. Major capital vessels can be named in that fashion.

dohyung,

I agree that 43% of the population could be involved as you decribe it in your last post.

The Vaygr are still called by that name as it is a culture. The independent Vaygr come in a variety of elements. Some are the remenants of the fleet/organization that followed the Makaan to destruction. Others are clans that did not side with Makaan. Tel' has a much better knowledge of these Vaygr. In my works I have described the current leader of the Vaygr as the S'rekam Kram. Kram being the title of the leader and S'rekam as one of the last great houses not decimated by following Makaan. His clan was intrusted with watching the Makaan's back and dealing with the area that the Vaygr had moved through on their quest for the core. There are many other clan I suspect and this is great ground for much work.

We rumor alot in PDS that the Imperial Taiidan are behind the technology gains of the Vaygr and in my fiction they are indeed a part of the Vaygr war effort, although they have plans of their own...

This leads me to your bit about coalitions, mercenaries, janissary and such. I think this a fantastic opportunity to develop some wonderful small scenario and further develop the PDS'verse. Certainly some of the conquered populations would turn to supporting the Vaygr as a means of gaining favor and some sort of income. In PDS'verse the Taiidan Republic (a smaller element of the former great Empire that coalesed into a Republic) was the first to crumble under the Vaygr invasion. Considering they are a fairly advanced group who are as warlike as any of the galactic organizations, I suspect they would generate some great mercenaries.

Finally, your ideas are just as valid as anyone elses. What has gotten others into difficulty has been that they have been unwilling to compromise. Which is unfortunate as they too had some marvelous ideas. I will see if I can dig up some of the old stuff we had on the Vaygr and Hiigaran in PDS'verse.

Inert - as one of the HW historians, you have any of the info and anything to add?

Dei
Hmmm... I hadn't really pondered the status of the Taiidan Republic much in this mod before now. I knew that the Imperialists had been somewhat assimilated by the Vaygr, but I assumed that either the Republic was relatively out of the way and not within the focus of the mod, or had been pretty much annihilated in the Vaygr incursion.

Your comment raises possibilities, yas, and not simply of the Taiidan Republic Navy Holdouts operating as mercenary companies. It might be possible that surviving TRN forces may yet be loyal to at the ideology of their fallen government, though I do not doubt that majority would be swayed by the grand promises of a resurgent Empire. Regardless, we then have to consider what kind of resources they could have at their sway; I doubt it would be especially considerable. Perhaps some roving carrier detachments.

While the Imperialists might be able to attain their goal fairly soon, I rather doubt we'd see a resurgence of the Republic. At least not in the lifetime of anyone alive at this point in the PDSverse.
Oh, my aching head...

yasotay
In my fiction while the Republic is crushed there is a large displaced Taiidan population in Hiigaran space (the Vaygr deported them and pushed them across the Hiigaran frointier in rickity ships to destabilize the frontier and give the HGN a humanitarian problem to deal with). Also a small number of TRN units did make it to Hiigaran space and have become a very small element of the Hiigaran Navy. With the arrival of leader from the conquered space (an exile from hiding) they will form the Free Taiidan Fleet, working beside the Hiigaran to free the Republic.

As to the Imperial's. It is relatively well accepted that the few remaining ImpTaii escaped into the Vaygr reaches. There technical capability might well have been what they bartered to not be ejected, or killed outright. As to the acceptance of the ImpTaii if they return; remember that it had been a 4000 year reign (I am no expert but that is a lot of history) so being ImpTaii very much in many peoples history. The balkanization of the HW galaxy after the demise of the Empire would very likely leave a good sized population missing the old ways (before the Emperor went bonkers) and the stability it brought. Recall that the demands on Germany and the crushing depression made furtile ground for what was a very rational but war weary nation accept dictatorship and war again in less than fifty years.
